Who would you recommend to take a straight octagonal barrel and and profile it to a contoured octagonal or even a straight taper?  It is ac VV 280 Ackley Improved, 28 inch and I would like to lighten it up.  Any help would be appreciated.

I think I'll have it "T"Blacked if I can find someone to turn it down.

Any smith who does barrel work should be able to do it. Actually anyone with any machine shop skill could do it but they have to be very cautious about warping the barrel as it grows from the accumulated heat.. For something this small I'd likely look for a local smith is possible as the shipping and insurance and the mail service can add too much to my stress levels...

First choice is the guy who specializes in this stuff, Wayne York, Pendleton, Oregon....

at least email Wayne, he'll tell you straight. Bet he says don't do it, for same reasons gunnut alluded to about hurting the barrel.

There can also be changes to the bores interior dimensions but there doesn't have to be. The problem many don't understand the difficulties with turning ANY barrel. Of course all barrels are turned at some point so it is possible, it just requires some common sense practices. The centers used should be spring tensioned, at least one. The material should not be rushed and coolant is needed. We must keep the barrel from developing pressure lengthwise or it will surely warp. The interior dimensional changes take place when too much stress is placed on the barrel by the bit. It's one of the reasons Walther leaves that little boss on the muzzle end of their barrels, the other is weight distribution. It would also be possible to flute the barrel to remove weight. Even to reduce the corner to corner dimension AND flute between the corners to reduce even more weight. You must be cautious about removing too much metal and making the barrel unable to contain the pressures it must but a lot of weight can be removed on most barrels. Good luck!!

He has a non tapered octagon barrel he wants to remain octagon but changed in contour. Why so much comment on "turning" the barrel from everyone? Unless you know some thing I don't you can't "turn" an octagon contour on a barrel it must be filed or perhaps milled.

I only know one person in he gunsmithing trade who actually went to and graduated from a gunsmithing school. At the school he went to that was the final project students had to complete before they were allowed to graduate. They had to take a full barrel blank and turn it into a tapered octagon barrel for their personal project rifle. The one he showed me that earned him his certificate was hand filed and looked very professional.

I'd think that would most likely be the way it would be done would it not?

I did  misread that thought he was talking about an octagon to round configuration but in altering an straight sided octagon to a tapered octagon a file while it would work would be very time consuming. The most likely means would be a mill, as would fluting etc. If anything mills would be worse than lathes. Of course it is possible or there would be no tapered octagon or fluted barrels around.
