23 grains of Red Dot?
« on: June 23, 2007, 04:47:45 PM »
???I picked up an old Pacific DL 110 12 gauge reloader at a yard sale today. Disassembly showed that it had bushings marked 1 1/8 ounce and 23 grains Red Dot. Most loads on the Alliant site are much less, with a very few showing up to 22.5. Any idea what this press was set up for?

The answer to your question may be that "old pacific press".  It it more than 30 or 40 years old?

Shotgun powder charges were about 10% larger in the pre-one-piece plastic wad days.  In other words, that press may have been set up for the old style cardboard overpowder and overshot wads.

JT--thanks. There's no way of knowing how old this thing is, but it's in good shape.I have a bag of old wads around someplace, so I might do some reloading with them before I worry about finding or making other powder bushings.I don't do a lot of shooting, just wanted the capability to reload.

I dug up an older (1966) Hercules (now Alliant) load book. The heaviest 12 Gauge, 1 1/8 load they show with Red Dot is 22.0 grains. That's with a card overpowder wad. With a cup op wad like the Alcan, the powder weight is dropped to 20.0 grains.

Interesting. Hornady has a parts listing for this press, including a charge bushing chart. The 23 grain Red Dot load is shown as a 3 Dr  target load. Must have been some pretty stout targets. ;)

Since I'm unlikely to find other bushings, I'm thinking of reducing the volume of this one by using tape to partly cover each end, putting it on its side, and pouring in a little thin epoxy.

Bushings are only as far away as your Hornady,RCBS,or P/W dealer. They all interchange and will fit in your 110.

DP--Thanks. I hadn't bothered to check yet. Since this press has a rotating charge head instead of a sliding bar, I figured the bushings were probably different, too.
