CROSS DRAW HOLSTER SEARCH
« on: June 30, 2007, 05:49:57 AM »
Im looking for a cross draw holster for long periods in a car and for field use.  Ive decided on a cross draw type but havent found a maker yet.  Years ago I have a regular production model for a Mod 29 that worked either straight drop or crossdraw; but it left with the gun, and I cant remember who made it. I need two holsters one is for a 629 4inch and the other a 6inch Trooper Mk111.  Ive found the cross draw is comfortable in the car and out of the way in the field.

Im looking for suggestions of factory stuff and custom makers.  Does anybody have a custom shop they use?

You might want to take a look at simply rugged (http://www.simplyrugged.com/leather_goods/index.html).  I just order a holster from them so I don't have any first hand experience with them.  The sourdough pancake can be worn strong side or crossdraw.

I have a Ross cross draw or strong side that is very well made.  They come wet molded and once it was worn a while it fits the gun perfectly.  Real leather too not the plastic coated finish on some of the leather I've seen.  Wish I could afford them for everything.

If you will google ross leather or ross holsters the web address comes right up.  I got mine cheaper than advertised through a local shop.

Mitch Rosen whom makes all of my leather stuff makes a crossdraw (Transverse) and another specifically for seated car use.  Nop notch stuff!

I have a 4" S&W 629 that I carry in a Galco holster that can be worn either strong side or cross draw. It has a thumb break retention strap and is an excellent holster for that particular revolver.

Just a warning. I have a Bob Mernickles cross draw holster for a 4" N-frame, and it's the most UNCOMFORTABLE holster I have ever strapped on. I've tried to use it a few times, but I've never made it out of the house with it.

Griz, which Mernickles model was it you didn't like?  I was thinking of ordering a FC3, maybe not now.

Yeah, I think it was. I've already sent it to EDELWEISS or I'd check, however a quick look at their website sure looked like the holster. The one they show fits a 6" and mine was a 4". It even took them two tries to get it right. The first one was too short and it hung up on the front sight when you tried to draw it. The second one was the right length, but like I said, was just too uncomfortable. Of course, that could have just been me. Maybe if I had six-pack abs it would have worked, but went in for the keg shape instead. :o

What I like about the Simplyrugged holsters, is the option to use them both ways...or even three ways if you get the inside out snaps with it.  I've had one for a while now and it's my all around holster.  It was a good price, top quality, and real versatile.

Another Simply Rugged fan! Excellent quality at a good price. Had about a 9 week wait. I ordered some extra custom touches; lining and such. They are basically custom makers, and offer innovative crossdraw plus strongside holsters.
People have asked me where I bought such a nice, unusual holster!!
Just look up the website.
No, I don't know anybody there and they aren't paying me off!! Western Colorado is a far piece from Alaska. I was just amazed when I first visited the web site last year. Good, simple, durable holster ideas that averaged a little less money than many other makers.
And now that I actually have one of their products, I'll be ordering more.
