How long are you talking about? I use a heavy coat of Break Free CLP. I have a couple of firearms that have sat in my safe for several months to a year without any problems, and I live in a high humidity area. If I were to store for several years, I might look at getting some Cosmoline from someplace like Brownells. In fact, they sell several tyes of long-term storage greases. They also have storage bags and rust retardent, treated pads of some sort to put in safes and in platic bags used for storage.

Do yourself a favor.  Don't put cosmoline on anything until you know how much work it'll be to get it off...

As I remember from my Army days, it is very sticky and hard to get off.  I recall placing the rifle, sans stock, under very hot running water.  The cosmoline would melt and run off (about 140* so hot water heater had to be bumped up for this)--with some help from a brush.  Then tearing it down, drying and lubing everything.  Air compressor or heat gun would probably help right about now but might cause some rust as there would be no oil or anything on the metal.
Might be a better way now days but don't know of one myself.

Here is what Midway has to say about it  (www.midwayusa.com)

Material:Cosmoline - a rust and corrosion inhibitor in grease form
Quantity:12 oz
Container:Plastic wide-mouth jar

Notes:

Made to military specifications

May be brushed directly onto metal at room temperature or softened in a hot water bath for easier application or for dipping small parts

Can be removed with very hot water or petroleum or chlorinated solvents like Insta-clean (334-393)

Intended for use when long-term storage of a metal item is necessary

I would really check the on-line Brownells catalog before I made a decision. Cosmoline is just one suggestion, there are other rust inhibiting greases. Check with them and you may find one that is easier to remove. I don't know how long it takes Cosmoline to harden, but most of the firearms I have cleaned it off of have been very old and the Cosmoline was on there for years. But one thing is for sure. Cosmoline works. As hard as it is to remove, it is a lot easier to deal with than rust!
