Contender will not cock
« on: July 21, 2007, 06:11:20 PM »
Hi there I'm new to GBO. I have been reading post for quite a while now and have gotten lots of ideas however I got a question.  I purchased a used Contender with a 7-30 and 223 barrel.  It would not fire due to weak hammer spring and worn internal parts. I sent it back to TC for repairs.  Just got it back today but now it will not cock with a barrel in the locked position.  It will click when I pull back but will not lock however it will lock back with the barrel open and stay cocked when shut. I painted the locking lugs to see about lockup and it appears to lock up fine.  It was hard to open before I sent it in, but now it's really hard to open.  I will send it back with both barrels for the easy open option but was wondering if any one has ever run into the not cocking problem.

thanks Carroll

First off, welcome to the site.   As for your Contender, it appears that the sear is tripping when you close the action.   The sear and/or overtravel adjustment screws may be set for too light of a trigger pull - this was a common problem with some shooters who did not understand the workings of the action.    Try closing the action very gently and see if that helps to identify the problem - you may be able to reset the adjustments and not need to send the action and barrels back to T/C.  Oh, and obtain and read the manual for instructions.   ;)

Thanks for the info.
I did as you suggested and it works. I can close the action gently and it will cock.  If I close it with any force I mean any force it trips.

I have a farm and shooting is no problem.  Think I'll go out after supper and try a few.
In addition I'll look into the trigger adjustment.  The note from TC said they set the trigger pull at 3 lbs. this may be to light.

Again thanks for the info.
