44 Mag twist rates
« on: August 05, 2007, 08:08:17 AM »
Can anyone tell me whether the twist rate has changed on the 44 Mag Super 14 barrels over the years? I have an older 6-groove barrel (which appears to be about 1:14), and I was wondering whether it has the same twist rate as the newer 8-groove barrels. I'm interested in loading 300-330gr bullets at subsonic velocities (under 1100fps at the muzzle), and I'm wondering whether they will stabilize.

I have a 14" barrel - as old as yours I suppose.
I did not have any success with subsonic loads (240-300 gr).

Darn, didn't want to hear that. I wonder what kind of twist rate I'd need to shoot +300gr hard casts out to 100 yards or so without keyholing? The little ballistics program I have on my Palm Pilot seems confused by this extreme so I was hoping to tap into a little experience. I appreciate you sharing yours with me.
