32 winchester special lead load data
« on: April 27, 2007, 05:06:25 PM »
i received my grandfather's winchester 94 several years ago
been shooting hornady 170 jacketed

wanting to shoot lead
i got your firelapping bullets and compound and lapped the barrel

also got some of your 170 grain gas checked bullets

haven't been able to find much in the way of loads

do you have any recommendations or how do lead gc'd bullets compare to the jacketed for load development

I'm sorry you bought Beartooth bullets, as they don't have LbT lubricant, nor do I have any idea whether they are made in a LBT mould.
However, if they chamber alright, just use jacketed bullet starting load data and you will do fine, if the lube they are using is any good at all.  If the fit is undersize or their lube junk, that worst that can happen is some leading which with come out with 3-4 jacketed bullets.

If I were certain you had bullets of my design, of a proper size for your gun, and lubed with LBT lubricant, you could use loads well over what jacketed manuals list, with complete safety and excellent accuracy.

The .32 Win Spl is nothing more than a necked up 30-30.  For equal weight bullet use 30-30 load data.  Pressure and velocity will be less since the bullet is larger diameter and twist is slower, 16 opposed to 12 in 30-30.  The slower twist is very cast bullet friendly.  IMO the .32 Win Spl is a better cast round than 30-30.    Powders that work well run from Unique through 4895.

LBT definately makes THE bullet for 32 win.  A 170 gr LCFN, or if the gun happens to have a longer than normal throat, the same weight in LFN.  Jacketed loads for similar bullet weights will work very well with either of these, but velocities will be some higher with the lead loads.  These heavy loads will be fine with air cooled wheel weight metal if LBT lube is used, but back way off if you aren't using LBT lube.  Air cooled wheel weight metal will perfrom on game almost identical to average jacketed bullets available for this chambering.  By that I mean they will expand out to at least equal range, with the LCFN working way out beyond any jacketed bullet I'm aware of, due to it's delightful B. C.
I've obtained best results for heavy loads using the slower burning ball powders listed in jacketed loading manuals.  Fast powders like Unique are only good for light loads.  4198 is good for up to about 200 fps under max velocity.  748 has been optimum in my shooting.

I'm a little new to the cast lead bullets.  Do you make the bullets also or just the molds.  If you don't make the bullets, is there a place I can buy the 170's made with your mold and lube?

All the products LBT offers are listed in our website,    LBTMoulds.com                 and we don't sell bullets.
Try Montana  Bullet works.  I believe they have a mold that will make you some bullets.  If not, ask them how large an order you need to place for them to put on in their lineup.  I know of no one that beats their quality, nor any other commercial caster with the bullet you desire.

Howdy,
For most of my cast bullet reloading, I consult the older editions of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbooks. My perfect .32 Spl load uses a 187-grain GC bullet over 2400 powder. I use stick ALOX in my sizer and I experience NO leading of the bore.
The .32 is a fun cartridge. Good luck with it.

2400 is excellent powder for light loads, being quite inexpensive as small charges will produce decent target loads.  However, I very much prefer 4198, which produces considerably lower pressure when loaded to 2400 velocities, and it can be loaded to fairly close to full power loads.  You'll find in most of my answers I lean toward getting full power hunting loads, as such answers aren't available in any cast bullet loading manuals that I'm aware of.  For such loads, choose one of the ball powders listed for jacketed of similar weight, and the same charges will probably work fine without higher pressure than jacketed, and velocities very similar.
