Colt 1851 Question?
« on: July 25, 2007, 12:48:32 PM »
Greetings, Did Colt ever manufacture the 1851, 36 caliber pistol with a brass frame?  I ask because I have come across an 1851 with all the correct marking except the frame is brass.  The gun looks very old.  Also, I seem to recall reading an article about Confederate Colt copies in which they used brass for the frames as iron was tough to come by.  Does this ring a bell with anyone?

thank you,

sherpa

Colt never manufactured a brass frame revolver.  A Confederate gun would not be marked as a Colt.

What are you seeing to be "correct markings"?  If is has Colt markings on the barrel, it is probably a parts gun using 2nd or 3rd gen parts on an ASM or Pietta brass framed gun.  I don't recall whether Uberti ever made a brass framed 51, other than the Navy Arms Grant and Lee revolvers of years ago.
