Dog Down!!
« on: August 06, 2007, 05:42:46 AM »
Wife has a job interview this morning at 11:00 and I couldn't promise that I would have been off in time to watch the kids so I took the day off.

This gave me a chance to get out early and make a couple of stands. For the first stand I set up on a hay field that had been cut recently and still had round bales on it. Had timber to the west about 600 yards, to the south about 400 yards, and the road and more timber to the east about 100 yards. Set the decoy up about 75 yards in front of me to the south. Set down with my back to a hay bale and started on my distress call. Blew on it one time and about 2 min later I had a pair coming in straight west of me. Got my gun and sticks turned in that direction and waited for them to come on in. The one in the lead stopped about 125 yards out but the second came one in to within 60 yards and stopped. She presented me with a quartering shot and I put the crosshairs right on her shoulder and squeezed the trigger, she fell DRT. The other dog took off full tilt and by the time I could get reloaded and on target it was on top of a ridge with a couple of houses and lots of cattle somewhere on the other side so I didn't want to chance a shot.

Busted her at 6:45am at 58 steps. 22-250 with 55gn V-max & 34.6gn Varget. Small entrance with no Exit.

After a few dry stands last week I was questioning my calling abilities (couldn't even get a crow to come in) and went back to my R.B.Boyd Custom. This is becoming my Go To call when I can't seem to get the others to work.

Thanks for reading this long post and enjoy the pics!
