17HMR is capable of tiny groups at 100 yards but it depends on lots of stuff.  The three HMRs I have all work best with the 17 grain bullets, but some do well with the 20.  Group size varies with brand of ammo, and even batch.  And the little pill gets pushed around lots with the wind, so it requires a more careful shooter than larger rounds.

Poor answer I know, but I need more information about what you are going to do with it, and what you are planning to shoot it out of.  Then maybe you will get a better answer.

The half dozen crows I have shot with mine useing the 17 gr Hornady V Max turned into puffs of feathers out to about 135 yds. 10 shot groups cover with a dime at 100 yds. 20 grains hold about a inch at 100.

Sub MOA consistently, sub 1/2" groups occasionally with 17grainers in my 917V.
Turned a few barn pigeons into puffs of feathers in the 50-75 yard range....but that's all I've had a chance on so far.

If you're looking at shooting sub 12lb critters, or are concerned with group sizes...by all means go for the HMR...
If you're going to push it to some of the larger varmints, the .22mag is a better choice for sure.

Lots of HMR shooters forget there are centerfire cartridges for a reason.  That little pill is effective for small things, but don't push it.  Some of the Rimfire Central crowd thought the HMR could double for an elephant gun.  It doesn't.

also the 17remignton fireball would be good for larger than 10lbs game

Marlin 917VSS   It takes about 300 rounds to break in the barrel and I do not clean it until accuracy starts to drop off. Then it takes another 20 - 40 rounds to shrink groups again. Seems to like a dirty barrel. :o

The 17 rim fire rounds  are  fine for small varmints. I use the 17 HM2 rifle for shots out about 80 Yds  and the 17 HMR rifle for shots out to 150 Yds when shooting prairie dogs. The 17 Gr bullet out of the 17 HM2 has about 100 ft/lb energy at 80 Yds while the same bullet out of the 17 HMR has about 100 ft/lb energy at 150 Yds. The 17 HM2 i bullets flatter shooting that the 22 LR and the 17 HMR  bullet is flatter than the 22 WMR. There are a lot of 17 HMR fans that can be found at www.rimfirecenteral.com
