Alaska handgun hunting regs??
« on: August 08, 2007, 06:30:57 AM »
Hello Everyone,
I've been trying to do some research on what the handgun laws are for hunting in Alaska.  For example what minimum barrel length, minimum caliber, etc.  I've tried looking it up online but must have missed it.

Thanks.

I'm not aware of any specific handgun laws for big game during the general season. I've heard of big game being taken with the larger caliber handguns, but have no personal experience.. My interpretation of the regs is any centerfire is ok. During the general season, it occurs to me that the consensus is, it's your butt and your bar of soap, wash it anyway you want to...

Dave is right, the only restriction that I am aware of is for Bison.  The cartridge must retain X energy at 100 yards, and I think a 30-06 is the bare minimum for Bison.  Everything else Centerfire Cartridge is all it says.  Pistol or rifle is OK.  Just remember Moose and Bears are hard enough to kill with a rifle, do you want to face one with a pistol?

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I have taken one moose with a handgun.  No problem.  More people hunt with a handgun than you might think.  Many sheep hunters carry Encores for the weight loss.  My goat gun is a 7MM/08 Encore, 15" barrel, Stainless.  Depending on your caliber of choice, since many people bow hunt everything too, a handgun will work.

Sorry to rebut you guys but I primarily hunt everything with a bow.  Going to Fairbanks on the 1st of Sept. to hunt cow moose and then switching to goats in Valdez.
