Savage Model 840
« on: June 01, 2003, 07:41:37 AM »
I recently "inherited" an older Savage model 840 rifle from my fiancee's uncle.  It is a small gun with a short barrel, in relatively decent shape, chambered in 30-30.  It has a removable magazine, and a fixed 4x scope.  Now, I have read a lot about Savage, and even own a Model 110 in .223 for coyotes.  But I have never even heard of this one.  Is there somewhere that I can find information about this gun?  Does anyone know if I can change out the barrel or replace the stock with one of the aftermarket jobs available for today's rifles?  I was thinking I might be able to put on a .221 Fireball or .17 Remington barrel on it, and make it into a small critter gun.  I would imagine I would have to find a different magazine as well.

The 840 was a low priced bolt gun and is no longer in production. It was made in calibers 222 Rem, 223 Rem. 225 Win, and 30-30. If the parts are available from obsolete gun parts sources such as Gun Parts Corp, it should be fairly easy to convert to one of these calibers. As the 17 Rem operates at much the same pressure as the 223 I would assume it to be a do able conversion but fear the cost would far exceed the value of the weapon. Plus these rifles are not the strongest actions in the world I would advise just using it in the caliber it is in.  These little rifles are quite nice to introduce the next generation to deer hunting. The 30-30 can be loaded with 130 grain pointed bullets(safe in the detachable magazine of this weapon) and they work just fine on deer within reasonable ranges.  And kids should be taught to only shoot at reasonable ranges(a good idea for all of us).

Loki -

If you take a closer squint at the Savage, I think you'll find that's a Model 340, instead of an 840.  The "Springfield" was a Model 840, however, they are one and the same rifle.
