Rifle building project
« on: August 20, 2007, 09:59:47 AM »
I have several rifles in different calibers...so I have "all of my calibers" covered for what I hunt. Now, what I would like to do\try is move to a rifle building project. I've been reading\researching and talking with knowledgeable people about what I need to be careful with. It's not brain surgery, but if I'm not careful, I will need brain surgery. ;)

So, I have come across a new Stevens Model 12 Action Stainless Action (only) RH .473 Bolt Face with lt. wt. accu-trigger, new unfired for $310 and a new BVSS stock to fit the action with trigger guard for $120. This seems like a pretty good deal. I will need to look for a barrel and I am thinking of one chambered in 7-08 as this is a caliber that I don't have, but one that will fit the bill for deer down to groundhog if I want to shoot that caliber on any given day.

I guess my question is does this price seem fair for the action and the stock?

Thanks

Dave

Is the action the new Savage single shot long range/varmint one? If it is; it is a very good deal. If not I do not think it is not too bad anyway. Not bad on the stock either. I assume it is already finished and it has the stainless trigger guard. The SS trigger guard is worth around $25 by it self. You can get barrels a lot of different places. E.R. Shaw, Pac-Nor, Shilen, Savage Shooters Supply, and Midway are just a few places to get'em. I personally would like to know your source for the action. I have wanting the SS single shot action for a while now. Good luck on your project, I have done a couple of Stevens and a Remington. I have loved every minute of it, looking to do more. There is a lot of satisfaction there. ;D

I forgot to add that look at it this way. You will have $450 in it and then you need a barrel. Depending on what you get it will cost you somewhere around $130 to $400. You will need a barrel nut, about $20 or less. Add that up and you will have less than the cost of a top notch Savage in your rack with the same performance. If you opt for the top of the line barrel then you will have a gun for about the same cost as a top of the line Savage with a better barrel.
