.45 LC / .410 survivor as a deer rifle?
« on: August 04, 2007, 02:57:21 AM »
Hi guys, I have located as as new blue survivor in .45 LC / .410 (SB1) and am thinking buying it to use  as a lightweight short range deer rifle. Has anyone out there fitted one of these with iron sights, red dot, or a scope and done any testing on accuracy out to about 75 yards? I have enough .410's but am always looking for a new short range deer gun, truck gun, or camp gun to try. This gun can be had for $125.00 plus tax...Any thoughts?....Thanks....<><....:)

P.S. The same place also has a Whitetail Unlimited NEF 45-70 for $175.00 plus tax with a laminate stock and medallion but it cannot be fitted with high intensity barrels....

i think the 45 colt should do fine for a short range deer rifle. i'm guessing that the survivor is a smooth bore with a rifled choke tube ???. is should group as good as similarly equipped slug guns.  here is a link to an article about the colt in carbines.

btw, i would snap up that 45/70. sounds like one that i lost to a fire, i loved it!!

The 45C/410 Survivor barrel is rifled with a removable choke tube. As I recollect, there have been a couple members that had their's drilled and tapped for a scope rail, and got reasonable accuracy with 45 Colt ammo in them, certainly minute of deer!! ;D

Greg, If you want that 45-70 Whitetail unlimited it is at Kittery Trading Post in Kittery Maine. They do sell over the phone and will send that gun to your dealer for you. Below is a link to the gun.
OH NO!!! I went to their used gun site to send you the link and it was gone!!! Someone must have bought it since yesterday...sorry buddy...:(

Quick, do you, or anyone else, have any other thoughts about the survivor using .45 LC round as a close range deer gun? Do you think the barrel is as strong as the new .45 LC barrel that NEF has recently brought out? If I buy the gun I will put some sort of sighting system on it...Thanks....<><....:)

I'm 99.9% sure the 45/410 frame is an SB1, that being the case, it definitely isn't as strong as the 45Colt Carbine which has an SB2 frame, same as on the BC. Using standard 14kpsi colt loads, I doubt you can achieve a lot of velocity with the long bullet jump of the 410 chamber, at least not compared to the BC carbine, but they'll be better than the standard handgun loads which are only about 700fps to 1000fps max depending on the bullet used, which are commonly used for deer at handgun ranges. I wouldn't recommend using  +P Ruger/TC loads in it unless H&R Oks it, they're up to 25kpsi.

I've often thought about the 45/410 barrel for use in MN's slug zone deer hunt. I'd like to hear if anyone has loaded brass 410 cases with 45 colt bullets and gotten better accuracy by reducing the jump. I have searched for info. on this and found little. I'm of the thinking that firing 45 colt loads out of this would be illegal, but using the brass cased 410 with a bullet would be legal.

Billy,
Although I cannot say for certain. MOST states do not allow 410 to be used for deer/big-game hunting. But MOST (That allow hi-powered ammo) will allow the 45Colt. Even loading the 410 as a single projectile firing 45 cal bullet...in the "eyes" of the law, its still a .410 and not legal.

MSP,
I would say with some restraint concerning yardages, you will be fine with the 45 colt loaded to moderate loadings. Some years back my little sister fancied deer hunting with the boys. i made up some light recoiling bullets for the Colt. I think I used about 20grs of IMR4227, but do not remember the exact load, so PLEASE CK FIRST.  I did use the Speer "flying ashtray" 200gr bullet though. Its the one that's intended for the 45 Auto. I loaded it to about 1100FPS, IIRC. It was very accurate and performed well in my penetration experiments. Now this was 20 years back. Today there are many good bullets for the 45auto that you could press into service for your project. Just stick with the "OLD HEAVY" loads for the COLT model "P".

GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for the responses, experience, and information guys. I was thinking of buying the .45 LC / .410 Survivor. loading up some regular .45 LC loads and keep them and some .410 loads in the truck with it while in Maine. I thought I might fit the barrel to one of my SB2 frames and load that configuration up to a bit more potent levels  as a close range deer gum. This is coming out of a long wait for my long hoped for .45 ACP Handi barrel. I now have my .35 Remington barrel so my thoughts are now on this.
Quick, that is why I had asked you and the others here your thoughts on any differences between the new .45 LC BC barrel and the original .45 LC / .410 Survivor barrel, especially the strength, but also if anyone knows, the potential accuracy differences. I take it when you shoot .45 LC ammo out of the Survivor you remove the choke tube correct? Is there a thread protector that goes in or is that not necessary....<><....:)

MSP Ret,

I have the T\C 10" 45-410 barrel. When I shoot 45 long colt's out of it (which isn't all that often) I just pull the choke and there is no thread protector. When I shoot 410, the choke goes in.

The choke is to prevent the 410 loads from continuing to spin from the rifling. Were it not for the choke, the shot pattern would spin, and open up....kind of like a flying doughnut. So, if you were a really good 410 shooter, you would constantly miss as the center of the pattern would have no BB's....it would drive you nutz. If you were a cop, it may be just what you wanted with your coffee..... ;D >:( :o ::)

Andy, the Survivor 45/410 barrel has a full choke tube that is removed when shooting Colt ammo, just as Dave explained for the TC.

Thanks guys, the price of $125 does not seem to bad so I may get it. Any idea what they can be had new for if one shopped around? jAs an aside what has happened lately to the prices of receivers and barrels on the forum? They seem to have risen quite a bit. I would always expect to pay around $40-45 for a SB1 receiver and about $75-$80 for an SB@ receiver and between $75 and $100 MAX for a centerfire barrel and those are shipped prices. Lately the prices have jumped up to almost e-bay range, do you think it may be the info that e-bay is going to stop selling gun parts? I had hoped if they got out of the game for Handi and Pardner/Topper parts the prices here on this site would stabilize to where they were just a few short months ago....<><....:)

Andy

I have seen the 410/45lc's go anywere from $175 to over $200 new so $125 an't a bad price . as for the other , it is only going to get worse , with E-Bay out of the picture the guys that would normaly sell there are going to be looking for a new place to sell and pricing their parts as if they were going on e-bay .

I see it as free enterprize but that does not meen that i have to pay those prices .  ;)
