stoploss traps jammed by pin and chain
« on: August 11, 2007, 09:51:11 AM »
I've been playing with some old B&L stoploss traps with the delay pin. I noticed a few times the pin and chain became tangled when activated and prevented the guard bar from working. Has anybody else noticed this? I know some trappers don't use the delay pin, is this the reason why? The traps I have hold the foot towards the spring side and the chain is attached to the non spring side, this  seems to create a mechanical advantage and these little traps hold much better than a regular longspring trap regardless of the non wring-out properties.

When I worked with Bill Duke on redesigning their stop loss, the first thing I had the do was remove the delay pin completely.Number 2--was to remove the chain from the jaw end of the trap, and move it to the spring end of the trap. When the chain is attached to the jaw end, muskrats have to much free chain and are able to pull right up onto the house or feedbed.
I have never gone along with attaching the chain to the jaw end-----I have never had a problem holding any animal caught in a #1 stoploss. They key is a good strong spring.I have held countless numbers of coon over 30 pounds, and my largest beaver caught in one, was 53 pounds.

I will 2nd Tom's advice on the no use of the pin. I use both Victor # 1 round pan stoploss and B&L 1.5 stoploss and don't use the delay pins. I have not done so for more than 15-20 years. Catching up in the guard mechanism would be one of a list of 3-5 more reasons why I would offer my suggestion for you to not use the pins and why I choose not to.
