Had to make it hot!
« on: September 17, 2007, 01:11:23 PM »
Just cast some 500g Lyman HB 58 cal bullets of pure lead couldn't get the skirt to fill out at the temp. I am use to casting at. So I turned the pot up as far as it will go 800F and cast until it was hot in my shop, finally got 50 excellent bullets. They are really to pretty to shoot but I will suffer through and shoot them.
I went ahead and cast some 58 cal real bullets and some 50 cal while I was hot. Think I will wait for cooler weather to cast more of them. I have an old Lyman castmaster pot that has had the bottom pour stopped up to do my pure lead, so I had to ladle them which is hot anyhow.

if your truely at 800 degrees it should be plenty hot to cast pure. If you have a buildup of crap on your pot you might not actually be getting there. Try cleaning your pot. Also preheat your mold either by putting it in the melted lead or by using a propane torch. Pure cast best out of a real hot mold. A mold that is right on the verge of smearing lead so once you start you have to get a fast rythmm going. Adding about 2 percent tin to your melt will help to and do little to make your bullets harder. If your ladle casting leave your ladle in the melt inbetween bullets and keep it hot too.
