Puma M92 Q's
« on: November 21, 2006, 06:10:28 PM »
as the proud new owner of a .454 Ruger Super RedHawk, I think it's only natural that I should get a companion rifle in that caliber. The only thing I can find is the Puma M92 in various configurations.

So I've a few questions for the experts:

1)How are Puma rifles? The only levers that I own are Marlins, and the only ones I've shot are Marlins and Winchesters. How do Pumas compare?

2)Is there a good reason to go longer than 16" on the barrel? The 454 is fast enough out of a 7.5 inch barrel to take anything I'd ever shoot at pretty respectable distances. I'm leaning towards the 16" for quick handling and compact size. Would a longer barrel increase range and decrease flash/kick enough to be worthwhile?

3)Will the M92 in 454 casull load/chamber/fire/extract .45LC's?

4)Any reason to not go with the stainless?

5)Anything else I should know?

Thanks much for your help.
Robert

I have a Puma M92 20 inch blue.I can't answer anything about the 16 inch or stainless, although that was what I wanted.A local shop had the one I own at the right price,I haven't regreted the choice.I have the LSI with the NON fiber sights.I would say that was the only thing that needed attention,I replaced it with a reciever sight (Williams FP).The stock hasn't cracked like some claim happened and I have put around 200 rounds through it.They will shoot 45 Colt although I never had any need to.They do kick,so shooting off a bench will get your attention.Mine shoots as good as I do.Contact Steve Young  check http://www.leverguns.com/if your interested.

I though the same way you do -I've had my Puma for almost 3 years now. Nice companion to the 454 SRH. With heavy loads it gets your attention real quick! My 240 XTP mag load come out at 2300 fps! The 300 gr XTP Mag at just under 2000 fps! More then enough horse power for anything you want to shoot!  Nice little gun for carry in the Mountains around here.

I just purchased a new stainless steel M92 in 454 Casull yesterday.  Other than the wood the overall fit and finish of the rifle was very good but the wood was about the worst I have ever seen on a rifle.

When I removed the new unfired rifle from the box I saw right away a crack in the fore end just in front of the barrel band and then I saw another crack in the butt stock beside the tang.  I showed the cracks to the fellow that brought the gun in for me and after a call to the supplier a new fore end and butt stock are supposed to be delivered today.

I load both 45 Colt and 454 Casull's so had to try the different bullets in the rifle to see how reliable they feed thru the action.  Everything from 200gr RNFP 45 Colts to 395gr C/P WLNGC's feed and ejected perfectly.
