Good Deal???
« on: March 23, 2009, 11:35:15 AM »
I am in the market for a new used truck.  I found a 1999 F250 super duty that has 140,000 miles on it for $3900.  It has the 5.4 ltr engine in it.  It looks to be clean and in good shape.  Is this a good deal and are these good trucks?  What about the engine?  Are they reliable?   Its at a dealer which worries me a little and I know it has been on his lot for over a month.  I typically stay away from used truck dealers but they seem to giving good deals these days to keep their doors open.  Is there anything I should look for?

You might check with Kelley Blue Book and NADA to see what the truck is worth in your area. I think you can pull a report online for a small fee to see if the truck has been in a major accident. If you can find a Consumer Reports buyers guide at your local library it should have good information on the overall reliability of the vehicle you are looking at, and give you general idea of the trouble spots of any given vehicle.

At the company I work for, we run quite a few Ford trucks and they have proven to be fairly reliable with regular maintenance.

Research your area for the prices.  I never met a Ford that I didn't like ;D.  Service it, wash occasionally, enjoy driving.

When buying a used vehicle I look to see if the previous owner can provide a maintenance record.
If I see the oil was changed every 3-4000 miles and tires rotated on schedule I am now ready to discuss price.

Stay away from used car dealers that wear gold chains and jewelry. ;D

Depends....zI tend to steer clear of any used vehicle with that many miles especially a gas engine.  If it were a diesel it would be a different situation.  If the vehicle is in good condition, it might be worth it.  Although the 5.4 in 1999 only made 260hp and in a heavy truck it will feel like a slug.

My dad has one with the 5.4 and it has actually been a good truck. He has over 260k on it now and has had very few problems with it. As a matter of fact, the only problems he has had were sensors and he did have a spark plug blow out of the hole while driving down the road! LOL The threads were pretty much gone out of it. We are assuming that the previous owner did it and rigged it to sell it. A helicoil later and it is still running down the road.
