My vacation to Quebec city
« on: August 05, 2007, 06:14:09 PM »
I just got back last thursday from Quebec city and went to NASCAR in montreal this weekend so I'm only able to get around to this now. Here goes. First I visit the "Les plaines d'Abraham" or Abrahams battlefields in the old port of Quebec and got a few pics of the Original pieces lying about. Some have been fished out of the river, some the ground and others were vandalized by scrap salvages over the years. I didn't have much time, so no details unfortunately.

Some are a little too modern to fit this board but they share the same field so I stuck 'em in anyway for any history buffs.

These next few were taken only at night and didn't come out too good but this time I was able to get some details. These were located along the waterfront just behind the Chateau Frontenac castle. That would be my wife and kid in some of the pics.

It's a shame the BBL's aren't angled downwards and better care not being taken in their preservation.

We visit a friend of my wife's who's husband just came back from Afghanistan. He's in the Royal Canadian Artillery (called something else in french but I can't remember). He had a lot of cool stuff on base to show me so I went in for a visit. Some of these pics don't fit the board either but again they were taken on my way inside to see their own little museum where they keep a few replicas for firing salutes for the big chiefs when they're in town.  I asked if he had any spare camo netting I could use hunting and he has plenty. Problem is he drove his motorcycle in and he couldn't bring any home for me that day. Next time. He did, however, give a 105mm shell to his machinist to buff all perty as a souvenir for me! It was dented pretty bad and headed for the scrap pile but the machinist did a good job straightening it out before buffing it. That was one of the highlights of the trip for me anyway!

Their display wall/case.

And finally my souvenir!

Definitely be a long time before I forget this trip!

Oh yes, safety will be the first thing I teach him. Our hobby is a pretty dangerous one, everything flammable, explosive, caustic or even questionable is under lock and key in this house! Thanks for the compliments. ;D

Looks like you had a good time.  Don't worry about adding teh new stuf in. Your post is about the old stuff and includes the new, and that's okay.

Was that a Leopard.  Back in the olden days when I worked the field, I siezed three of those from the Canadians...what does it take to stop a Tank...Customs Officer looking for the paperwork!!  The worst thing though, was I had to give them back. No fun, no fun at all.

DoubleD, you should have just motored up to the border driving the tank and told them that they were free to look inside the tank for contraband, but assure they that there wasn't any  ::)

Yeah, she's a leopard. Decommissioned and put on display. I just missed a brand new fleet of M777 howitzers. they came in on a Thursday and were shipped out to Afghanistan the Friday before I got there! DOH!

Cannonball, I really enjoyed your story and pictures. I especially liked the French? cannons on the metal carriages, I have not seen those before. That was a real pretty Sherman also. Sorry you missed the 777's but at least you got a nice souvenir. Thanks for sharing.  Tracy

If I'm not mistaking, that Sherman has a dragon fly gun. I didn't think any of them survived after the war.

I think it is an M4A2 Sherman with a T-23 turret This had a 76-mm gun with a muzzle break. these were to give the Sherman a better chance against the increasing numbers of German Panther tanks. I don't know how many survived. Oops, we are kind of getting off topic. Cannons, Mortars, Black Powder.   Tracy

Thanks for sharing these. It is really nice to see cannon from other places.  I have to say the people on this forum are one of the nicest bunch of guys you will find.   I have a friend in Singapore that is researching cannon and forts in his country.  I will email him and ask him to join the forum and post some of his recent pics.  They are not allowed to own or shoot firearms so they build model catapults and shoot bows.

Copdoc, more than welcome. Catapults eh, there's another interesting hobby.

M223, I wish I could have taken more detailed pics of everything I came across. It was crazy hot that day and the water-slides and wave pool in Valcartier were calling my name! LOL

I wish you guys could have seen Abrahams battlefield! There's so many more guns. It should have been a whole day event. And the mortars way down at the other end of the park... Man I should have taken a walk over to them. I have a pic from a previous visit to Quebec but it's a bad shot and I cant get it uploaded for some reason. I'll send it to a moderator and see if they can stick it in here.

I commiserate with you on the heat. thanks Cannonball and D.D. for the mortar picture. I wish I would of had a camera when I was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. The U.S. Army Ordnance museum there has a whole lot to see, mostly stuff post dating WW-I , but neat stuff nonetheless. They have a pretty good web site if you do a google search.   Tracy (m223)
