Bulk Remington Golden bullet?
« on: September 05, 2007, 07:43:31 PM »
I have been shooting the 22 for 37 years and can say that I could count the duds on my fingers.
One of my sons bought me two boxes of Rem high speed HP ammo. I was sighting in my nylon 77 which has about 80000 rounds though it and about one out of ten wouldn't go off. If I loaded it again rotated 50/50 chance. I thought maybe my spring is getting weak or the firing pin is getting worn.
Well I was shooting two pistols the next day and they both had about a 10 % dud rate in both.
This ammo came from walmart I beleive.
Anyone else have this problem?

I have a 550 pack that I gave up on, with so many duds.  Tales the fun out of shooting.

I bought a brick of Rem Golden Bullet a couple of months ago. Way too many duds. Less than 100 shots and I gave up.

More recently I got a brick of Federal copper plated hollow points (550 rounds). I guess I've shot about 200 with only one dud so far. Also I got a box of Rem Target (100 rounds) at Walmart. Shot them all, no duds.

Ever stop and closely inpsect the remington G/B's before you fire 'em?
The last brick I bought had four rounds that had the brass stripped away (most likely during bullet seating?). Two of those four were so bad I could pour powder out of the split. There were also about a dozen that had VERY loose bullets that were causing jams.
Nasty stuff, IMHO.

I've always been a fan of the Federal Champion bulk packs--but since they changed the box to blue and red, it seems like the quality has changed. (These are the champion HP's)
Now I buy Federal Champion 510's in 50rnd boxes...it's $1.06 per box at walmart. Great shooting, round nosed bullet...still comes to about $11 per brick with tax.

Thanks for the replies,
I have to think about the fact that 22's are cheaper now than when I was a boy. I will pay more for cartridges that go off and think it is a shame that more American companies are more worried about cheap than good.

To be fair to remington, I've never liked the bulk box stuff. They hang up in all the guns I have except the few bolts I own and one Winchester pump.  The only semi gun I ever owned that shot them without a ton of misfeeds was an old Lakefield/Savage.  I've tried Winchester x-perts, Federal blue box, and Remington golden bullets in the big box, I didn't like any of them.  CCI is what I buy.

I have had good luck with the bulk Federal hollow points. and fairly accurate in both my 22A Smith and Wesson and my Glenfield 60.

I tell you what guys I quit using Remington Golden Ammo back in the late 60's due to them having a lot of duds even back then and If you ever did a search on my post you would see I said that before when I was mad about the Remington Premier 22 mag ammo having lots of duds though they claim now they fixed that problem.I brought up the Golden ammo then havind a lot of dud issues  IF so  on the Premier stuff it probably is because some one else is making them for them. Now the last thunderbolt ammo I shot was sure fire but I do not really care for it over other brands. What really ticks me off is if you call Remington and complain they act like your the FIRST one who ever had problems with any of their crappy rimfire ammo. Hard to figure out as they make good shotgun and centerfire rifle ammo.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

That's probably why they have Eley make their 17M2 ammo.Slow

i use the gold bullet bulk pack for wally world in my ruger 10/22 and it shots fine  every so often i have one that dont fire but not to often i think there a little hotter than the Feds are my 10/22 dont like the fed bulk pack hot enough to throw the bolt back to cycle another round in the chamber so thats all i shoot in my 22 rifles
1 shot 1 kill
