renegade recommended bullet molds

I recently purchased a .50 cal renegade in perfect shape. Tried 385gr buffalo bullets, but no good. I have come up with the idea of casting my own, any recommendations as to what mold might work well with a 1:48 twist. I see the real bullets come in 250 & 320? Any Ideas?  Mike

  I cast the 320 grain R.E.A.L bullet for my 1-48 twist .50 caliber CVA St Louis Hawken.  They are very accurate in my rifle.  Have your tried patched roundballs?  I get 1" to 2" three shot groups at 50 yards off the bench with both R.E.A.L. bullets and patched round balls.  My 70 year old eyes can't do much better.  Lee also makes moulds for balls, while you are buying.

Get both of the REAL's you will be happy with one or the other. Also use a felt wad between the bullet and the powder. I make my own and lube them with Hornady lube.



You might want to try some 385 gr Hornady great plains. This group is 3 shots.

My rifle 50 will shoot the 410 gr hornady  even better. The average group is about 1" at 100 yards. Here is my best group at the bottom.   Ron

Yes I had thought about round balls but sometimes the shot opportunities may extend to 150 yards around here so thought a bullet might be the ticket? Couuldnt stabalize a 385 gr buffalo bullet in the 1:48 so I guess I will try both the 250 & 320.  Ten pounds of plumbers pure lead is on the way, & the molds I found for $14 a piece. I can use my camp stove & just need a ladel & melting pot.  This sounds like a fun deal. Any more suggestions? Thanx,  Mike

If you plan on shooting 150 yards, you had better spend a lot of time at the range. The drop off past 100 yards is a big problem, and if you miss judge the range by 20 yards, it could be a miss or worse yet a wounded animal. I have spent a fair bit of time shooting longer ranges and found it just too hard to judge range in the field. Good luck, and have fun making smoke.

Snoeshoe, you are probably right, 150 might be the extreme, 50-75yards  is the usual. Maybe I should try the round balls & see how they preform??? Mike

With the recent rule changes in Idaho - I had to make some changes in what I shoot.  I really do not like the thought of needing to use a short starter in the field while hunting so I did some looking around and I have found the answer for me.

I am shooting .503 - 460 grain Bull Shop conicals - these things shoot great, have a decent BC for that big of chunk of lead.  I shoot it from my Renegade with 80 grain T7-3f.  I was really surprised that this large bullet shot so well from a 1/48 short barrel.

Here is one of the first targets I shot with the Bull Shop bullets...  Since then things have even gotten better.  I can set clay pigeons @ 100 yards and just pick them off - one shot - one bird -> man they shoot great
