I second the 357.  Great for anything from plinking to 30-30 loads

Well I am not a serious handloader so I would go with the .44mag. Practice with .44 special and hunt with 300gr XTPs. I am sure the .357 will work fine too. If you handload alot than any is as good as the other, IMO. People argue the points of .45 vs. .44 all the time, but the fact is that either will work well on deer. I have killed deer and hogs with a .357 and .44mag and I prefer the .44mag mostly because of the guns I own. I say whichever barrel you could find cheap is the best choice. Sorry I wasn't much help in picking "one."

The 357 barrel will kill all out of proportion, inside of 150yds it will kill every bit as well as a 30-30 with less noise and recoil. The 357 Maxi is even better   my2c   Doug

I have a .357 marlin lever and shoot deer out to 125 with speer 158 gdhp...and plink with 38 spcl. great gun very fun to shoot it is my 6 yr olds deer rifle.. killed his first deer last year with a 243. a little too much gun for him though. the 357 is perfect with a set of shooting stix.

Your state issues licenses to 6 year olds?  Where do you live?  I gotta move there!

In Tennessee no license is required until age 13. Alabama and Florida have similar laws. They usually do require that an adult be right beside them and ready to take control of the weapon
