Are Ruger Blackhawks legal?
« on: January 13, 2008, 11:21:57 AM »
I'm wanting to get setup for SASS and I was wondering if any single action can be used, like a Blackhawk, or does it have to be a Vaquero? The only reason I'm wondering is that I find more used blackhawk 45lc for good prices then vaquero's. I thought about getting a cimarron or uberti but I have been told they are inferior to Rugers. I'm kind of on a buget getting started, I already have a lever-action 45lc puma 92.

SASS is set up in categories. Blackhawks are legal in Modern and senior classes. We have several people using them in our club.

Blackhawks are legal not just in Modern and Senior, but ALL age-based categories: Junior, 49er, Senior, Silver Senior, Senior Duelist, Elder Statesman. Plus all the female equivalents.

From the 2007 SASS Shooters Handbook, page 15:
Quote
SASS additionally recognizes protected shooting categories based upon age and gender. These categories incorporate the following standards. Unless otherwise stated, any SASS–legal firearm, ammunition, and (non-Gunfighter) shooting style can be used.
SASS #44254L, ROII
SBSS #1314, OGB- SCORRS
NRA Endowment - TSRA Life - GOA Life
Oakwood Outlaws - Thunder River Renegades

I never understood why SASS will allow adjustable sight six shooters in the modern class, but not reciever sights on the rifle. I have seen old advertisements for a Marlin made reciever sight that probably predates  adjustable sights on revolvers. I can still do some credable shooting with a reciever sight, but old eyes make open sights harder every year.

Get a tang sight put on your rifle instead of the open rear sight.

I put one on a rifle once and took it back off about two days later. just too close to my eye for me to feel comfortable.

I have shot with eyeglasses since my youth so it didn't bother me.
