Just to let everyone know, I am ready for the Pennsylvania squirrel season. I have a Freedom Arms Model 83 22lr with a 7 1/2 inch barrel with Lovell mounts, topped with a Leupold 2 1/2 X 8 handgun scope. At 50 yards it groups about 3/4 of an inch. The factory 2 1/2 pound trigger with a trigger stop really helps me to achieve that 3/4 inch group. If anyone was doubtful about spending this kind of money for a 22 handgun, all I can say is don't worry. Money well spent. Rod in Pa.

Mine (actually a 252) is the best "squirrel rifle" I've ever owned. Wears a 4X Leupold.

Sounds terrific ! I am going to have to put some parental controls or something on my computer...I should not have read this.. waht a fifty yard group... Cut the onions in advance, the meat is obviously a sure thing..

Rod---I'll bet your 252 will do better than 3/4 at 50....unless you are getting 3/4 inch offhand! THAT would be great! Still that is "minute of squirrel head!" Did you do a lot of ammo testing? One of my buddies has your same gun and he can do 3/8 at 50 from the bags. I use a Model 97 7 1/2 inch with Lovell mount and a Bushnell Trophy 2-6x for tree rats and after testing moderately priced ammo, I found 3 or 4 were very good and too similar for me to tell the difference. I had a good supply of Wolf MT on hand so that is what I used last year... same 3/8 inch off the bags at 50 and offhand, it depended on how much coffee I had! I will say that I find my M97.22lr a little harder to shoot well offhand than the M83 because of the size of the grip. Gene

You guys are killing me.  I have wanted one of these since they first announced the 83 and then the 97.  I have resisted for a while due to funds, but it gets tougher by the day.

Know I have to decide 83 or 97 and which guns to sell so I can afford!

97 is slightly cheaper I guess, and I understand both shoot equally as well potentially.

My current thinking was 7.5" Model 97 with that same Lovell mount and a 4x Leupold with the non-match cylinder.  How is this frame compared to the Single Six in size?  The Single Six is a little smaller than I like, but the 83 seems a bit large for a .22.

Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

The frame is bigger than the Single Six, smaller than a Colt SAA (barely).  About perfect for a 22.

Given your feelings about size of the Single-Six vs. the 83, the 97 will be PERFECT for you. The Match chambers probably have an edge in pure mechanical accuracy, but they ARE a nuisance in the field. I also recommend the 7.5" barrel. A 4X Leupold is the best all around magnification for one, to my mind. Be sure to try Winchester 37 gr. hollowpoints in it.

Palgeno, I just reviewed my sighting targets for a silhouette shoot. As follows.; 25 yds, 3/8 inch group, 75 yds, a hair larger than 3/4 inch group, 110 yards, 1 1/2 inch group.  Ammo used was ELEY Match EPS  1006-01202 1059 feet per second and the same at 1071 feet per second. The 1071 shot better in my gun. Infro on firearm>> a Freedom Arms Model 83 with a  7 1/2 bbl , match chambers, 2 3/4 pound trigger with a trigger stop. Palgeno, to answer your question concerning accuracy.. I am sure this handgun would obtain better groups with almost anyone but me. I have never bragged about my shooting ability. I shoot a Freedom Arms as I need all of the help I can receive.  P.S.. all of the groups were off a rest.................Rod in Pa.

Rod--Well then you just might be at 3/8 inch at 50 yds! I tried 75 yds yesterday off the bags and maybe I need more scope or maybe it was wind or maybe it was the particular box of ammo or maybe I just need that "palm swell" glove for the 97, but I could not do better than 3/4 at 75 yards, in fact most of my 5 shot groups were closer to an inch. I was still OK at 50 yards, but I stunk at 75. I wasn't brave enough to go to 100 yds! Maybe next time. Gene

Tomorrow I am taking my F/A Model 83 44 mag to the range. It has a 7 1/2 bbl with a factory 3 lb. trigger, Lovell mounts topped with a Burris 2X7 handgun scope.  Since I don't reload anymore, I shoot Winchester 250 gr. Platinum tips. I will give feedback tomorrow night. Rod in Pa.

My FA .22 shoots tight at 25, 50, and 100.  Has an open area at 75-80 yards.  Same experience with two of my rugers.  (They just had to put silhouette turkeys at that distance!!)  My FA likes the wolf ammo also.  Did not see measurable gain using the Eley EPS.  Actually worse with Eley target pistol.

Several guys like the winchester ammo in their FAs.  Wolf did better for me.
