Custom Handi Barrels?
« on: August 15, 2007, 06:22:42 AM »
Does anyone know of a source on who or how to make a custom barrel for a Handi?  I've been thinking about this all morning and I can't seem to get to work. ::)  What I want/looking for is a 357mag barrel.  What I'd like is a 357mag bull barrel.  Tell me, is this possible?  Thanks guys for all the insight and wealth of info. you've provided.  Take care and hope you have a great day.  Later. ;D

Joel C.

The standard factory 357mag barrel is ~.750" at the muzzle, bull barrel Handis are .800", so there's not much to be gained with a costly aftermarket barrel. But it's very possible to have what you want by having a 24" 223 barrel rebored to .357" and then chambered to 357mag or max. Several of us here have had Wayne York of Oregunsmithing rebore barrels to chambering that aren't available,  338-06 A-Square and 405 Winchester to name a couple. Plan on spending about $300 plus the cost of the barrel/rifle for the project tho.

Wayne is doing a custom 6.5x55 for me right now, using a Shilen blank and a donor underlug that I sent him to be welded to the blank, so there are several options.

The more I read about that 338-06 A square the more I want one. 8)

Why won't someone make under-lugs and weld them on barrel blanks for us.
That's all some of the factory barrels are.
There is a market for them.

Wouldn't be that hard if you used a spring loaded extractor.
Then it could be solid metal.
Shouldn't have trouble with stuck cases in a good custom barrel anyway.
Just wish I had the tools and know how.
I'd be selling them to you guys all day.

I just got off the phone with Mr. York from Oregunsmithing, LLC and he said he can make me a 357mag/max barrel out of another Handi barrel for only $275 including reboring and rechambering.  My wife will by quite pleased since I've sent nearly ten times that much on just one of my R/C planes.  I can just imagine a 357max with a bull barrel cut to 20-22 inches.  Oh, the pain, the pain! ;)  Thanks for the insight quicktdtoo.  Later.

Post a want ad in the NEF Classifieds for the barrel. ;) If you're gonn cut it short, might as well get a 22" 223 bull barrel, they're probably more common, the Hornet isn't made in a bull barrel configuration, except for the one Shaner has, the lucky devil!! ;D
