Cleaning camo tape residue?
« on: June 04, 2003, 02:26:15 PM »
I used my Rem 1100 turkey hunting in early April.  Put camo tape on barrel/stock/forearm.  Got back and there is a residue or "stain" on the barrel from the tape.  I used alcohol to clean it off all of the surfaces, but now it appears the bluing is stained in certain areas a darker color.  It looks permanent.  Will this come off?  I am going to use Goo Gone tonight to see if it has any effect.  Any comments?

I have found that WD-40 and Silicone Spray cleanup tape glue.

Hope I'm all wet here, but that so-called stain sounds very much like rust!  I used low-odor mineral spirits on the residue on my grandson's Mossberg 500.  If none of the solvents remove it, I'd try WD-40 or Break-Free together w/ 000 or 0000 steel wool on the stains.

I use WD40 and steel wool (0000). It's do the least damage to the blue and will remove the glue and a bit of rust too. Go very lightly on the steel wool.. and use the 0000, it'l work the best..

Well, my problem is solved.  0000 steel wool and Break Free did the trick.  I have never seen bluing react to a chemical before like the tape glue.  Next time I'm using the neoprene camo covers you can slip on and off as needed, less mess, less work than tape.

Thanks for the help.
