A friend of mine has this exact same scope. (I think that he has it mounted on a .300 Win. Mag.)

He apparently likes it and has had no problems with it, but then again he has only had it for less than a year and has only had less than 50 shots fired from it.

I forgot how much money he spent for it, but I think it was over $600.00.  I don't want to tell you anything, good or bad, unless I have personal experience from it, or at least experience from friends that I trust.  As such, I really can't say any more than I already have.

However, I would like to ask why you are interested in this particular model?  I have a $1,300 Nightforce NXS 5.5x-22x-56mm ILLUMINATED MIL-DOT and I remember GB asking me why on earth I would need such a huge scope with water-jug objectives which can only be useful on super long shots and shots at night.

Well, he's right, but I was planning on using it for hunting in Europe where night hunts are legal.  Also, I wanted to, and did, use it for hog hunting in Texas where sometimes the hogs come out at night (it's legal in Texas.)  Still, 5.5x-22x is a lot of magnification, but I did this just for the fun of it?  Is this part of your reason too?

You asked about the Springfield Armory Government Model sscopes. I have had two of these, and wish I had spent a little more money and did it right the first time. I still have one, a 2nd Gen 4x14x56. I bought Leupold MK4 M1 10x Mildot. There is no comparison. The MK4 costs $400 more, but it is worth it. The 56mm Objective looks real cool, but in reality, does nothing. Accuracy was greatly improved. I never thought too much about how a scope affected accuracy, but I sure do now.
I would suggest, Leupold MK4, B&L Tactical. The B&L is a little cheaper, but is every bit as good as the Leupold. Check out the reviews here at SC on these two scopes.
Putting bad glass on a quality precision rifle makes little sense, do it right the first time and you will be way ahead in satisfaction and dollars saved.
Also, check out the MilDot Master reviews here at SC. This is a great tool to have if you use a Mildot reticle. Ditto for the "Slope Doper".

If it's between those two, then I would get the Leupold, but make sure its the Vari-x III, not the VXII.

Then again, talk to your friend about the Bushnell Elite 4200.  I just can't say enough about them.  Not only are they great for the money, but you can justifiably compare the Elite 4200s to the likes of Swarovski and Zeiss - and that's no joke.

I have a Nightforce NXS 5.5x-22x-56 Illuminated which costs about $1,300.  Believe it or not, my Elite 4200 is just as clear and sharp as the Nightforce.

No, my Nightforce doesn't have that reticle.  Rather, it has the illuminated Mill-Dot.  And no, I'm not disappointed in it, I just think that, for the money, it's not as great as it could be.  Thanks for the offer, but I think that I'll hang on to it.

BTW, if you are really interested in buying one, go to swfa.com (where I purchased mine) as they sell Nightforce scopes for less than everyone else. :grin:

The only problem with SWFA is that the don't have it in stock... they said they haven't had a 5.5-22 NXS come in for over 4 months.. they're the hardest ones to get because they're the most popular.  Even the authorized dealers are having problems getting them... most are 2-4 weeks wait time when I've called.  Oh well.  I like my Swarovski optically alot, but I just think the Nightforce would look better on an AR-10.  Anyways, I see that you're in Miami.... where do you shoot down there?  I'm from the Ft. Lauderdale area and the only rifle range I know of is Markham Park... I wish there was a longer range down there.

There is a shooting range outside of Miami called Trail Glades, or something like that.  It is located in Micosooki next to their casino.  It's okay - nothing to brag about.  The shooting ranges in Texas are MUCH nicer! :grin:

How long is the range?

For rifles its up to 100 yards.  (In Texas they go up to 300 yards and more!)  

For pistols they have an area that ranges from 7 yards to (I think) 50 yards.

HI KN-I have a 2nd gen.Springfield on my .308 Rem varmint synthetic for about 4 or 5 years,I had the power ring come loose one winter it was verry cold and I think the lube on got to stiff,sent it back and it came back looking brand new at no charge.I tested the range finder out to 600 yds and found it to be right on.I used a SR-C target which has a 12 1/2"black 9 ring and 5 shots on all six targets were all on the money.The scope is parallax free,no fog ring arround the outside,and it is as clear as any of my Luepolds and even as clear as my Shepard.The range finder is calebrated for the .308 168 grain bullet at 2600 fps.The ranging brackets are for 3-6-12-18-24 and 36"which works on just about any size game from gopher to moos.Lp. :grin:
