Metal spinner targets
« on: August 11, 2007, 05:23:09 AM »
Has anyone ever had any bad experiences with the metal spinning targets they make for plinking?  I've always been a little nervous shooting at a hard surface like that.  I have shot some black powder round balls at one but this target I just picked up says you can safely shoot it with a 22lr as close as 25yds.  I got it for my daughter to plink with her Cricket and will probably be shooting shorts but it still makes me a bit nervous.  Can someone set my mind at ease or confirm my fears?

Better the spinners than a flat non moving metal surface. From the latter I've had bounce backs from much further than 25 yards and is why the NRA moved the chickens out to 40 meters from 25 meters as there was a lot of folks getting hit by splash back.

I've shot many thousands of rounds of rimfire at spinners and knock downs at 25 yards/meters and will continue to do so but yeah you can from time to time get a little splash back but the spinners do not normally send it back like a flat non moving surface will. Wear eye and ear protection and have fun.

Those spinning targets are the funnest 22 accessory made since the hi cap mag, my boys love shooting ours.  I am not sure I have had splash back but echoing what GB said and say basic safety precautions are never a bad idea. One thin you will get a lot of richocets so a good back drop or lots of space behind is a must.  I generaly use mine outside of formal gun ranges  I like soft dirt and space.

I have two versions of the birchwood casey resetting flipping target one folds up nicer and does not have cotter pins that can get shot off. the other is taller and more stable.

As my boy progress I think a dueling tree would be a fun thing.

I have gotten backsplash from metal chickens at 25 meters.  Most of the pieces are bases, flattened to about 1/32 inch.  None of them hurt me, but it was disconcerting.  I always wear eye protection, as I only have one good eye, due to a childhood accident.  I definitely would not want a piece of lead in my eye.  I read somewhere that it takes 350 f/s to penetrate skin, but only 150 f/s to penetrate the eye.  I have never had backsplash from a spinner, though I have found fragments on the ground around them.
