First Range Trip with the Huntsman Barrel
« on: October 02, 2007, 02:26:30 PM »
After getting my receiver back from H&R with a new 26" Huntsman .50 cal barrel fitted It was time to go to the range.

I set up targets at 50 and 100 yards. I have a Bushnell Trophy 1.75X4 Circle X Muzzleloader/Shotgun scope installed. I was using FFFg Pinnacle powder, 777 brand 209 primers and a 240 grain sabot from Harvester. They have a funnel hollow point and a crush rib sabot that makes them easy to load. They have worked well on two deer and at $8.65 for thirty the price is right too.

It took me several shots to get on paper at 50. I was surprised at how soft the recoil was with 100 grns of powder. I think the recoil pad and the gun weight have a lot to do with it.

I shot thirty bullets with a spit patch between every shot. Everything shot everytime with no problems at all. I had a lot of fun on a nice sunny day just making smoke.

I got 1.5" three shots groups at fifty yards and the best I could get at 100 was all my shots inside 3". That is as much a factor of my sixty year old eyes and make shift rest. It will be plenty good for deer as that is what I am going to be doing with it.

What a fun gun for a little bit of money. H&R lightened the trigger for me also and it was much better than before they worked on it.

I did use a range rod for loading and only loaded twice with the included ram rod just in case I needed a second shot in the woods and I would not have the range rod with me.. It worked fine. Not wonderful but fine.

Two more weeks until the Georgia ML week comes in and I think I am ready.
