Barrel fittng question
« on: September 03, 2007, 07:55:58 AM »
First  let me say  i read the stickys about fitting barrels.
i have recently gotten a huntsman and .243 combo. i have an extra shotgun reciever that has no barrel or stocks for ( yet )
what i'd like to know is, can i fit a reciever to fit the Ml barrel that is already fitted to the combo reciever.
so i guess what im asking is, can i have 2 receivers that 1 barrel will fit. its sorta the other way around from how its normally done i know, but i just though if i could do it, then my ML barrel would fit 2 different recievers, it'd be a nice setup..
i know its a dumba$$ question, Glenn

Changes in fitting are always done to the barrel, never the receiver, if you makes changes to the barrel to fit one receiver, it won't fit the other receiver if it did before the change. That said, the muzzleloader barrel doesn't need to fit with the same precision as a cartridge barrel, you could use a temporary shim for it on one of the receivers and remove it for the other receiver.

Well what i found was, the ML barrel fits my .410 reciever perfectly, except the latch wont set into the notch on the barrel where it should set.
the barrel hits the latch but it wont move back into  position.. other then that it looks and feels like a perfect fit.
what can i do ( to the reciever ) to make it work ? . note this reciever is being used for nothing else...

If the latch doesn't engage the latch shelf enough, and the .410 frame isn't used on any other barrel, you can modifiy the latch a little, although I suspect it's very hard, may take some grinding as a file may not do anything. Just be aware that if you have a barrel fitted to that frame, it will no longer lock up well once you change it.  I think I'd remove the latch and flat grind it so you don't change the angle, just make it slightly shorter. A new barrel latch, or catch as H&R calls it, is $3.35 if you mess it up. ;D Use Perko's downloaded instructions for R&R of the latch.

Why not just fit the ML barrel to the SB1 receiver and be done with it? That way you don't have to get any corrosive powder residue on your SB2 receiver. That way you won't have to change anything when you want to take either the .243 or .50 cal out, they will each be ready to go. Unless you plan on selling the Combo on down the road.

I could do that too. At this point i'm just looking at my options. Im not sure if i want to break up the combo or not and i have an extra receiver, so im tossing this idea around.
If it works out then great, if not, no loss
But if i get the stocks i want, and they turn out to just right, color  and fitment  wise, then i just may fit the ML to the SB1 , like you suggest and leave it at that..
but i was curious if it could be done, so i though i'd ask

Tim, i think i hear you saying that the latch is too long ? that makes sense if i understand how these part interact.
i can pop out the latch and slow grind it on end, untill its short enough to catch the notch in the lug ?

i'll read thru perklo link.

It won't take much to make the latch fit, so I'd try filing it first. Although the muzzleloader barrel isn't as critical for a good fit, try to keep the latch end square so it doesn't engage just one side of the barrel shelf too much and not on the other side, use a candle to smoke the latch or as Fred does, uses his wife's lipstick!!
