Scope for 7mm wsm
« on: January 18, 2008, 10:50:31 PM »
Hey guys I was lucky and picked up a new Winchester model 70 coyote lite in 7mm wsm. I'm a big fan of this cartridge because of how flat it shoots. My problem is trying to decide on a new scope. It will be used on everything from open country mule deer to elk and bear. I'm thinking 4.5x14-50 Leupold VX III. My buddy thinks its too much power and says a 3x9 will be better. What would you guys put on this rifle?  ???

I have that Leupold on one of my 223's and it is a good scope. On my 7mm I have a Monarch 3/9 and it's an even better scope, so good I just got one for a 243. Best of all it's around $210 and you will not get a brighter, crisper scope for less than $500. The field of view is just so much better on a 3/9 and with a 7mm you aren't gonna be hunting little critter. Do a search on the Monarch, Team Primos, got mine from riflescopes.com (swfa)

I'm sure to be shouted down by the "it's bigger so it's got to be better" crowd but you've got a trim, quick handling rifle, why mess up its balance and lines with some stupid-looking, men-in-black POS scope. A 3x9x40 would be the largest you could want.
Regardless of what they say, there will be some recoil involved. With the higher mounts you will need to get the bigger scope on the rifle, you won't be able to properly mount the rifle with your cheek against the stock.  Instead, your head will be up in the air. Sight picture goes to hell, rifle cant enters in. Poor accuracy results.  Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.   ;)

A good 3x9 or good fixed 6x. I want/need nothing over 10x for big game hunting. A VX III 3x9 with the post & duplex reticle would be as good as it gets IMHO.

Elk hunter, you made a good scope choice, but I would prefer the 40mm Objective for a more consistent cheek weld plus with the 40mm you can see well past legal shooting time anyway as this is a high quality scope. You can also check the new Monarch 3-12x42, it has great specs. as well. The nice thing about these scopes is they are small for their power range & will not hurt the balance or quick handling of your rifle one dang bit.

BTW, congrats on your CL. I don't know of another bull barreled rifle that is this lite, great combo.

This coyote lite is more accurate that my Remington 700 Tactical in 308. I'm getting groups of .69 to .84 at 100 yards. I'm loading 160 grain accubonds with 51 grains of varget at about 2900fps.  :o

I have a Leupold VXIII 4.5X14X50 A/o on my 7mag and it is just what the doctor ordered. You have the low end for close shots and the high end for long shots. The 7 mag and the 4.5X14 are a match made in hunting heaven

I have a 3-9x40 Bushnell Elite 3200 on top of my Md 70 FWT in 7wsm. Plenty of scope for me. My 270 WSM has a 4-12x40 Bushnell Elite on it.

I was in the same dilemma last year scoping my 270wsm. Deer hunting is in the open wheat and CPR fields. Elk in thick timber. I went with the Burris Euro-Diamond 2.5x10x44mm withe the Ballistic Plex retical. I had it  on 2.5 power all the time elk hunting. Deer I carried it on 6x till I was ready to shoot then on 10x to use the Ballistic Plex retical. Took a mule deer doe at 298yds. worke real good for me.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr
