Bolt Closure on 700 Mtn Rifle

Greetings,

I just picked up a Rem 700 Mtn rifle, with parkerized finish and black synthetic stock.  I was told it was being cleared out because it was last years model.  The caliber is 243 Win.

This is my first model 700 with the J-lock.  So, I'm not real familiar (or impressed) with this feature.

Anyways, the bolt only goes down about half the distance of my other 700 rifles (five others).  It seems to be locking up, but this is odd looking. 

Is this rifle functioning normally and safely?  I have the red dot showing on the J-lock.  With the white dot showing, the bolt will not close at all.

Fast responses would be appreciated, as I want to go break in the barrel tomorrow morning.

I thought I had owned every model of Mtn. Rifle Remington made but have never heard of the one you mention. Does the box actually say "Mtn. Rifle" on it? If so that's a new one on me. I have owned a couple of SS metal and synthetic stocked ADL type Mtn. Rifles from years ago but that was well before the J-lock.

Your rifle sounds to me more like an ADL than a Mtn. RIfle to me as that's a general description of the ADLs with plastic stock assuming of course it's not a BDL magazine configuration. If it is I have no clue when it was made or what it would be properly called.

As to the condition of the bolt no Remington rifle I've ever owned to include those with J-locks have had any difference in appearance or funtion of the bolt as compared to the others I've owned. I'd have to say this one of yours has a defect that I'd want looked into before firing it if I'm understanding correctly what you are saying.

I wouldn't go shooting it either. J Lock or not, the bolt should be performing as any other 700 bolt would/should.

I'm with Graybeard as far as never hearing of a Mtn Rifle with a black synthetic stock, if there was one, it's news to me  ???

Do you have a digital cam? If so, take a pic and post it. It'll make this rainy, dreary Sunday a little more interesting.

Unless the stock was swapped or Modified its not a MTn Rifle,they came with wood.Have you removed the bolt and checked the breech for obstructions?Sometimes there will be small pieces of foam from the packaging that work their way inside and cause problems.

Did you get the instruction book with the rifle?  If so, it might be a better source than cyberspace. When you turn the J lock all the way to one side (with the red dot showing), can you dry fire the rifle?  A 700 will not fire out of battery.

The gun you may have is the Cabela's MTN Guide rifle. They are the Mountain Rifle barrel and action set in the synthetic stock from the Titanium rifles. I have one in .308 and really like it.

As for your problem, I agree with everyone else.I would take it to a gunsmith to have it looked at.

Thanks for all the responses guys!

The box does say "Mountain Rifle", I've got a friends digital camera tonight so I'll upload a pic if possible.

The firing pin does move forward, and sounds like a solid dry fire when the trigger is pulled (even though the bolt handle is only half way closed).  The gun was bought from Gander Mountain, and the sales clerk said it was being cleared out because it was last year's model. 

I've got an email into Remington.  My Remington catalog doesn't even show the mountain rifle available in 243 Win caliber.

Forgot to mention one other tidbit ...

I can swap this bolt with a bolt from my 40X (in 22-250).  When I do that both bolts fully close on the other rifle.  Not that I'd try to fire them in the other rifle (headspace and all). 

So, I know there's not garbage inside the receiver area. 

Attached is a pic of the rifle, with the bolt closed fully (half way down).  Not sure this is visible or not.

I would have that bolt issue looked into ASAP. That is not normal by any means, and why another bolt goes and works normally is beyond me, and just further proof that the original bolt has issues.

Does the serial number on the box match that of the rifle?

Dang...I have been wanting a .243 Mountain Rifle...have bugged the guys working the Remington booth the last 2 years at BuckMasters in Greensboro...Maybe it was a special run for Gander Mt...Good Luck

Just looked and the serial number on the box does match the rifle. 

I sent an on-line inquiry to Remington on Sunday.  No response as of today.  Maybe I'll hear back tomorrow.

Below is the response I got from Remington:

Thank you for visiting Remington Country.  Have you recently
 installed a scope on the gun or has the dealer?  Most times when we
 hear this complaint the mounting screws for the base are out of
 position.  It is imperative that the long screw be in the back
 and the short screw in the front.  If you check this and it is
 not the case you may want to check to see if there is any type of
  burr near the chamber.

I checked and they're right, I had the long screws in the front (instead of the rear scope base).  Boy, do I feel foolish!
