So many choices - Which .357 mag to get first?
« on: August 12, 2007, 04:14:18 AM »
I want to buy a single action revolver to go with my Marlin lever guns.

So many choices.......Can anyone make recommendations for a first one? What should I stay away from?

Should I start with a Ruger?

I would absolutely get a Ruger. I recommend the Anniversary model. Mine shot 3/4 out of the box at 25 yards with Winchester 158 grain factory loads.....

Which version should I get? Blackhawk, Bisley? Vaquero?

Definitely a Ruger.  If you want a Bisley, grab one soon as they're no longer in production.  I pefer the Bisley myself.  If I wasn't to have the .357 in the Bisley, I'd go for the 6 1/2" BH model.

I like the 4 5/8 stainless Ruger Black Hawk. Great handling and accurate.

What barrel-lengths did they be produced in?

I'm new to the forum.  So it is with some trepidation I offer an opinion on such a subject, but here goes:

For a first single action, I'd have to agree with Ruger being the best first choice primarily because they have adjustable sights.  The Beretta Stampede is a very well finished gun, I have one in .45 Colt - chamber throats, forcing cone, alignment, and lockup (like a bank vault) are perfect, but it doesn't have adjustable sights.   I also have a .45 Colt Ruger that I wouldn't part with.  It's a great gun.

I have the 50th .357 Blackhawk and like it a lot.  Bought it used as a shooter (no box, no papers, just the barely used gun - no cylinder ring then, it has one now) - it is a sweet shooting handgun - it is sad to think of so many of those fine guns sitting in safes unused.   The smaller frame is nice if your hands aren't too big.  The gun is just plain "handy".

That said, the 6-1/2" barrel blued .357 magnum Ruger Blackhawk with adjustable sights is a heck of a good first .357 magnum single action.  It carries nicely in the woods, is comfortable to shoot with full magnum loads (if you grip it right), more accurate than most shooters, it usually has good fit and finish, and it is reasonably priced.

Unless you have a strong reason to get a Vaquero I'd recommend one of the models with adjustable sights.

The stainless ones are OK but personally I prefer the blued guns because the barrels and chambers are usually considerably better finished and I've never had a gun rust even growing up in Michigan.   The stainless ones are mostly acceptable, but after a couple of bad experiences I won't buy one with out running at least a dry patch through the bore and looking at it and the chambers, with a good bore light.

You might see if they have one to rent at one of the local ranges.  Trying one is less expensive than buying one and finding out you don't like it after all.

If you haven't fired one before, there are a couple of things that might make shooting it more pleasant.  The generic single action revolver (Colt SAA) was designed to be fired one handed, probably by a guy on horseback.  If one holds it in a conventional two handed grip the second knuckle of the strong hand will be tucked in behind the trigger guard and it will get whacked hard - it hurts - when shooting magnum ammo.  But there is a solution for this.  Hold the gun with the shooting hand as if you were going to shoot it one handed.  Let it hang down at your side so the barrel is in line with the forearm.  Then bring it up and wrap your support hand around it with out shifting your grip.  This usually moves the second knuckle out from behind the trigger guard, at least it does for my wife and I, so shooting it is pain free even with magnum ammo.

I, too, am looking for my first sa 357 and I'm pretty much decided on the Ruger. Not many other choices.

Not to hijack the thread, but, other than the fixed sites, what does the vaquero lack in utility compared to the blackhawk?  I'm thinking about the montero; it seems it would carry more easily for scouting/hiking and still do just fine for home defense, or am I off base?

Also, i've read here and there that ' you have to get the trigger worked on' ' you have to get the hammer worked on' if you're even going to think about shooting some CAS.  What fine tuning if any do these require, so I can figure that into what it's going to cost me?

Thanks!

An adjustable sight Ruger is your best value purchase in a single action. No real competition, period. Anyone who intends to learn to shoot well and master the handgun at the distances it will perform will need the ability to precisely zero, and adjust sight settings. A Master class shooter can perform well with fixed sights, but they're doing so despite handicapping themselves.
A Blackhawk or Bisley will perform more or less equally, it's a matter of the shooter's preference. The Blackhawk will certainly be easier to find. I'd probably pick a 6 1/2" New Model Blackhawk, but 2 dogs also offers an excellent suggestion in the 4 5/8" Anniversary Model flat top, if you can find one.
Stainless or blued...personal preference. The front sight on a blued gun will start off darker, wear better, and take cold blue better than the stainless blued (sort of) blade. The stainless is pinned and easier to change to a different configuration if you ever want to.
Trigger jobs? I can't tell you how many dozens of New Model Ruger SA's I've owned over the years. A bunch. I'm going to guess that less than a third of them have required me to stone creep out of the hammer, although virtually all of them have required me to bend or replace the trigger spring , a very simple job. Try the trigger pull on every .357 Blackhawk you find for sale in every gunshop you visit, or offered for sale by any individual you talk with. If it has a lot of creep , you might want to pass, or negotiate harder. Cost of trigger jobs will vary, but are simple on SA's. Ask for prices from your local smiths who work on revolvers.

Rugers typically need some tuning. I suggest you send yours to Alan Harton in Houston. He has tuned a BUNCH of Rugers for me and they are all uniformly excellent. Bare minimum would be to adjust the trigger and check the cylinder throats for the correct dimensions. For the Vaquero or other fixed sight type sixgun I prefer to have Alan install a dovetail front sight. I also have a basic modification that I have Alan do to the Ruger factory front that makes it considerably more attractive and offers a very sharp sight picture. Alan Harton can be reached at aharton@hotmail.com or 713 772 8314. Ask him about the 2 dogs package....snicker.....If you care to see some pics of his work you can e mail me at fcgarza0640@hotmail.com and I can send you some.

As of now, you can get a basic tune up done on your Ruger or other SA from him in about 3-5 weeks, full house conversions are now about 6 months out. You guys need to know that Alan Harton is in the process of setting up a website and I fully expect him to be considerably backlogged after that happens.

Is Alan Harton strictly Ruger?  I've been looking for someone to work on my DW 357max!

I called Alan to ask him if he would work on a Dan Wesson and he said he did not. He suggested you send it back to the factory as no parts are available. I have a Ruger 357 Maximum that Alan tuned up and it is a CHAMP! ;D

Get the Ruger Blackhawk with 4 5/8" barrel.  Do the trigger job yourself....easy.   If you load your own ammo, try the RCBS 180 silhouette bullet.  Very accurate in mine.

For the DW, try Jim Henry in CA or PISCO....http://www.piscogunsmithing.com/

i wouldn't buy a short-barreled 'small-bore' revolver, unless for concealed carry.  a .357 with 180 or 200 gr' bullets has serious power; but needs the longer barrel to really 'harvest' all that it's worth.   at least, that's my opinion.

that being said, if you will hunt dangerous game such as hogs you may want to go with a double-action piece since your caliber may require quick follow-up shots at those nasty beasties!   otherwise, if you have nerves of steel you can go with a 6 1/2" BlackHawk and load it like Paco Kelly does his .357 mag's with heavy bullets.    BUT, that ammo may be tough on your rifle.   the heavy-walled .357 BlackHawk can digest loads that other firearms would find destructive.    it is a hell-bender; just short of busting hell wide-open if you consider its price tag.

an option would be to re-chamber and load the .357/44 Bain & Davis in your BlackHawk; if that's what you buy.   you could use the same projectiles and powder.   obviously you'd be looking at different brass and primers which you may have for your other rifles already.

BTW: with all due respect to our co-conspirator, Fitch:  i find Ruger's in stainless steel to be better-finished than their blued models.   i really do.

take care,

ss'
