Suggestions for new scope
« on: August 25, 2007, 01:19:37 AM »
I have a brand new rifle  ;D. It's a Ruger Hawkeye stainless/synthetic in 22-250. I got it to use for coyote hunting this year, and I'm looking at a couple of scopes. I need higher magnification for 300 yard shooting with my old eyes, so here's what I've been considering - Leopold VX-2 6-18 x 40 AO,  Leopold Rifleman 4-12 x 40, Nikon Buckmaster 6-18 x 40 with side focus or Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15 x 40 AO with Firefly reticle. I've never seen the Firefly reticle. I'm leaning toward the Buckmaster, probably because I have them on two rifles already. I need to keep it under $400 if possible. If anyone has comments about these, or others, I would appreciate hearing them. Graybeard, you must have tested some of these. Thanks to all.

The firefly reticule is large and might cover the target at longer ranges.

Of the choices given, I'd probably pick the Leupold VX.......

I`m a Leupold fan. My long gun for coyote is a .22-6mm. With it I`m pushing an 80 gn. Sierra MK bullet to 3,600 fps. and maybe a little more, have settled on best load yet. I just picked up an 8.5 x 25 Leupold with mil dots for it. I`ve been using a 24 X and dialing in the range. I wanting alot more than 300 yrds. though. So far I`m 1 shot 1 kill at 350 and the only group I shot at 500 yrds. was 3 1/4 in.  With your 250 you should be good to 600 yrds. with a range finder and and carrying a drop chart or you could use a mil dot radical and not have to dial in your range. I would recommend the 6 x 18 VX 11 since they put 1/4 clicks in them.
