New 700 CDL SF...Long Throat?
« on: September 15, 2007, 02:53:51 PM »
I made some dummy rounds today for my new (unfired) CDL SF 7-08. The rounds are:

140 grain Partition
140 grain Accubond
140 grain BT
139 grain Spire Point
139 grain Spire Point Boat Tail
154 grain Spire Point
150 grain Core Loct PSP

Each of these rounds have a COL of 2.8 inches.  They are the full length of the magazine andthere is no resistance when chambered. Has anyone purchased a new 700 lately and noticed a long throat? Suspect this rifle has a throat that stretches from Alberta to Florida :o

Paul,
You might oughta get a Stoney Point gauge.  This gauge will enable you to determine exactly how far out the lands are on your rifle.  I think Hornady now sells these.  FWIW, many 700's I own are long-throated.

Hey Guys, thanks. Going to the range on Thursday, so we'll know the truth then. Yes, you are right, a Stoney Point Gauge is the way to go. I have a Mountain LSS that has a short throat (.270 Win) and had another too many years ago that also had a short throat, so this was somewhat of a surprise. I'll let you know how it shoots after Thursday.

Cheers

Perhaps the 7-08 is throated so it can also accomadate the 160's and 175's that a fellow might choose if he were going elk hunting. ??
If it shoots bad, you can sell it to me.  At a reasonable discount, of course.

"Long throat" shoots very well indeed, especially with 150 grain Core Locts and 139 Hornady Spire Points. 46 grains of H4350 for the 150s and 48 grains of the same powder for the Spire Points. Four shots to "dial it in" at 100 meters and away it went.
10 shots with the 150's produced a group that measures .9 across and .6 deep...dead centre and 2.5 inches high. The 139s best group was .5 inches with two through the same hole and the third touching, 2 inches high, dead centre. I just might keep this rifle :D
