Things are "Improving"
« on: August 25, 2007, 05:01:13 PM »
I sent my .280 Rem barrel to Wayne York to be reamed to the improved version. I'm very excited. He said he's running about six weeks on lead times so I should get it back before modern rifle.  ;D Now I just have to get dies. Any of you guys (Fred or Tim) have any suggestions on this subject. Any pointers on dies will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Ryan

Redding makes all the dies you'll need, I bought a neck size set and a body die. You can buy 280 Improved brass from Nosler, ain't cheap tho. You'll still have to fire form it since you'll be getting an Improved-improved chamber that is about .080"-.100" longer than a standard Ackely chamber, but it has the 280 Imp headstamp which is important to me. You can read about fire forming for a Handi in the FAQs, both Fred and I have links there. Hornady will also make custom dies for ya, see Mac's thread on that in the CVA forum.

have fun!!

Lee makes 40 deg Ackley dies, but you can't run them down to the shellholder if your chamber is long.

It's possible for a gunsmith to anneal a sizing die, chamber it with the reamer that chambered the barrel, and heat treat it. Probably add a bit to the labor cost, but it would get you the best die for your gun.

When Nosler sells regular 280AI brass I don't see no reason to ream the chamber longer than specified.

That way there is no problem with the standard 280AI dies.

Unless the 280Rem chamber is too long to start with, the the 280AI is a no go.
In all honesty the Handi is a poor platform for a 280AI since the barrel can't
be set back the required 0.004".

Besides what is wrong with the standard 280 Rem, specially with the 26"
barrel.

I exagerated on my guesstimate of the diiference in shoulder dimensions between the Nosler 280 Ackley brass and 280 Imp-imp after it's been fire formed in my chamber, although it looks to be more, the actual difference is about .050" as near as I can measure. ;)

In reality, what you actually end up with is probably a 7mm Gibbs, I don't have case dimensions for it, but from the 270 Gibbs and 30 Gibbs dimensions, that's pretty much what it is with a shoulder height of ~2.145" to 2.150", but a 40º shoulder.
