Anyone have a carbine in 38/or 357mag
« on: August 26, 2007, 06:07:58 PM »
I have a few thousand rounds of 357mag & 38 & I  was wondering if anyone out there has a 16inch or longer barreled carbine in this round? Does the extra length help a little with the FPS and Energy? Do you like it?  Also can the Encore shoot  this round or only the contender?

If I remember right it should up velocity 200-500 fps depending on bullet weight and powder As it is center fire it will work in both Contender or Encore.

I just picked up a Custom Shop 24" Contender bull barrel in 357 Maximum. Can't wait to try it out but I don't have a forend for the bull barrel, so that's holding things up. This seems like the ideal solution for a carbine barrel to me since you can shoot everything from 38 S&W up to the Maximum, and it can be loaded to nearly duplicate 35 Rem. factory loads.

i used to have a 22 inch bull from vvcg. it shot great. but it was  front heavy. i should have cut it down to 18. i traded it off and wish i hadn't!

I have a 357 max in a encore rifle with a 19 barre.  I have never shot anything except max brass, but I do load it down to 38 level with trailboss.  I am sure that your could shoot some 38 without to much trouble, but I expect that you will get better accuracy downloading max brass.

you may get a build up of carbon but a little solvent and brass brush scrubbing will take care of it

I am a BIG fan of .357 carbines. Marlin, NEF, T/C, I like them all.

Fox Ridge Outfitters can make you a .357 barrel for either the G2/Contender or the Encore.

Most .38 loads are nice and quiet out of a 20" or longer barrel, but they won't gain much velocity, maybe 10%.

357 Magnum loads will gain up to 25% or more over a 6" revolver and a a pleasure to shoot.

My favorite .357 is my inexpensive little NEF Handi Rifle with a 22" barrel and open sights.
