New 454 Load -- Initial Impressions
« on: September 02, 2007, 09:51:19 AM »
Tried a new 454 load out in my Alaskan yesterday. It is the 395 grain Cast Performance bullet at 1,000 fps in Starline cases. Superior Ammo loaded these for me. My goals were a heavy yet controllable load suitable for woods defense in this small (so to speak) revolver. I also wanted true 454 case length to avoid lead buildup possible when shooting 45 Colt loads of similar design.

I was pleased with the low recoil impulse. In single action mode at 7 yards the load was very very precise. Three rounds touching, three more within a inch or so. I am not a skilled shooter. My double action shots were flawed as I was trying to control recoil and ended up putting them low and left.  I try to control recoil with about everything I shoot.  Bad habit.  So, I guess I need more double action practice! But, I like the load so far.
