460 S&W XVR opinions?
« on: August 12, 2007, 05:47:04 PM »
I've handgun hunted (Hogs only) for some time with a Desert Eagle .50.   I'd like to step up in range and try some longer shots on hogs and do all of my deer gun hunts with a handgun.  Has anyone shot both a DE50 and 460SW?  Is the recoil and muzzle blast comparable?  I havent shot a SW460 but I've dry fired one in the gun shop and the trigger is 1000x better than the DE.  Plus there's (with the Hunter model) attachment for a bipod, longer barrel and you dont have the idiosyncrasies of a Desert Eagle.  ie...no lead bullets, cant rest the pistol on the bottom of the magazine, people think you have a Schwarzenegger complex.  Ok, I might have that but anyway...  This 460 seems like a winner.  Am I missing something?

I absolutely love my 460. I have the two tone PC version with the 7 1/2" barrel.
The recoil is actually less than my 6 1/2" classic in 44 mag. The 44 mag. is more of a violent recoil. Where as the 460 doesn't jump as much, it just pushes your hands back harder.
The muzzle blast is kind of interesting, to the point of being somewhat impressive.
The accuracy and ballistic performance out to 200 yards is excellent.
I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

I would consider the 460 S&W revolver and the Desert Eagle 50AE with the 6 inch barrel fairly equivalent in recoil.

I have the .460 compensated hunter and recoil is less harsh than my old Ruger 44mag. My 14 year old son shoots it all the time with me and it don't bother him none.
"where'd you get the gun....son?"

I have been shooting the 460 Mag from when they first hit the market. I would choose the S&W 460 Mag over most other handguns out there. The recoil is not bad at all, the muzzle blast is another thing. But overall, the 460 Mag is hard to beat. I use mine for deer and bear hunting. The accuracy in my 460 Mag is outstanding. I get 2 inch groups at 150 yards using 300 gr. hard cast bullets.

I have the .460 with the 12" barrel......Love It, by far my favorite gun hands down.
I am going to deer hunt with it exclusivly this season here in SC. And I am planning a hog hunt or 2 as well.
When I first got my gun a had a few issues with it but since I got them straightened out it has been flawless.
I have put 700 rounds thru it without a problem, I shoot the Hornady SST and I load my own using the starline brass loaded with 48 grains of H110 pushing a 240 grain Hornady XTP MAG bullet, I have no problem shooting groups at 100 yards, the other day I was shooting a steel coyote silhoute target at 165 yards, evry shot was in the heart and lung area, my buddies were very impressed, hell some of them could not hit the 165 yard target as good with their 30-06's
for anyone who is thinking of maybe getting one , DO IT !!  you will not be dissappointed.
