Using 44Spl. in the 44Mag.?

    F.A. does not recommend using shorter loads in the longer chambers. They do not offer a 44Spl. cylinder for the 44Mag. Model 83. Can the shorter 44Spl. be used in the Mag. gun if carefull cleaning is done prior to going to the Mag. loads.?

Can they be? Sure they will fit. Should they be? Probably not really and if so in limited quantities.

The problem really are the super tight tolerances FA holds their guns to. Those cases are really quite a tight fit to the chambers and when you fire the shorter rounds some crud will built up at the end of the case and eventually if enough are fired it might even erode a ring there. Got no clue how many it would take to do that but it could happen.

If you fail to clean all the crude out before firing the longer magnum cases it can lead to sticky ejection and if you ever do erode a ring there it might be even more difficult than just with crude to get the cases out.

I think it's best to just load your light loads in the magnum cases rather than hassle with it personally but sure you can do it and you'll get by with it for the most part so long as you clean the chambers thoroughly each time you fire it.

While they might not make a .44 speical cylinder I'll bet they'd make an extra magnum cylinder and you could then use one exclusively with magnums and one with specials.

I can load a LOT of reduced velocity ammo for the cost of an extra cylinder.

 I bought a used low mileage S&W 29-5 last winter that had been shot mostly with .44 spl and not cleaned much. To make a long story short, I alternately soaked and brushed with Kroil, Butch's bore shine and even used J-B bore paste. Finally chucked up a .475 bore brush in a portable drill for a minute or so per cylinder. I came away with the conclusion that the special is a fine cartridge.....in a .44 special!

Now that's the best way I've ever heard it put. And just to make all the .44 Spec. enthusiasts spit fire, I'll say I'd rather have one good .44 Magnum than a truckload of .44 Specials. Chuckle.
