Input on project
« on: February 15, 2008, 03:48:20 PM »
Well I have been looking for a 30-06 for a week or two. Wednesday I saw an ad in the local newspaper for a drug store in a little town about 20 miles away. Ad said haveing a gun sale. Did not even know they had guns but they had a picture of their gun rack and it showed several handis. So Thursday after work I head that way. Man did they have some goods deals on several brands of guns. The sale is a 2 week sale and I was about 8 days after the start. So some of the handis were already gone. He had a 25-06 several 270 223 and 243 one 45-70 and one 308. Well I went ahead and got the 308. This thing is nice . Pretty wood for a pallet wood stock. So my idea for a project is to have the barrel cut down to 18 1/2" and find a good shooting 180gr. round nose load. Srip the stocks and finish in tung oil. Add a good 4x scope. This rifles main use will be a short and compact thick woods gun. Shots would not be over 50 or 60 yards. I am looking for some imput on weather or not this is a good idea or will I lose to much speed in the shorter barrel shooting the heavier bullets. I was talking to an older man locally who knows a thing or two about guns and he said that the 308 would work better than the 30-06 in the shorter barrel so what do my fellow handi manics think about my project. I am really ready to get started on this and try it out.

P.S. Tim one of this days I am gonna catch up with you!!! (hahaha) :D :D :D :D :D :D

Its your rifle go for it. I killed dozens of deer with an 18 1./2 inch barreled Remington with the Hornady 180 grain round nose. Yes you will loose a little velocity but I found you can make up a little ground with some of the quicker powders.Ii used Imr 4895 with mine and I regularly killed deer out to 200 yds with no issue. I don't know what my velocity was I was to poor at the time to afford a Chronograph.

My 308 BLR has a 20" barrel, it's killed lots of deer and elk exclusivley with 180gr pointy bullets, PSP Core-lokts and Failsafes, I don't think another 1½" off the barrel would make a lot of difference to any critter, big or small, go for it, that'll get ya one gun closer!! ;D I've never chrono'd it, don't really need to, do I!!

One of the best gun shops in Fitzgerald GA was in a drugstore he had a little bit of everything. Another good one is Story's (I think that's how it's spelled ) in Opelika AL.
It might be louder and a bit of a flame thrower but you can't live on the differant in  velocity and muzzle energy

If most of your shots are 50 yds. or less I would consider a lower power scope like a 2x fixed or 1 1/2-5 variable set at it's lowest power. I hunt under those same conditions and learned the hard way about too much scope power in thick brush.
