« on: August 28, 2007, 09:01:38 AM »
I'm having trouble getting my handi-rifle to shoot well. I'm getting 4'' groups at 50 yards, what factory ammo has been working for you guys? Help me before I spend a fortune on ammo!!

Thanks for the e-mail. The only problem with the information is all his shooting was done at 25 yards.Things will be different at 100 yards. I've tried the 300 gr evolution, and the accuracy was poor. Has anyone tried the winchester 400 gr platinum tip?

Shooting the 500 can be a good excuse to get into reloading, factory ammo is very costly, for not much more than a couple boxes of ammo, you can be handloading your own. ;) Mine shoots handloaded 350gr XTPs, 440gr Cast Performance and 700gr Ranger Rick's into 2" or less at 100yds. scoped. Just something to consider. ;)

I only shoot lead but 2-3" at 100yards is the norm with bullet weights from 440 to 700gr.  Get into reloading with what ever you can afford and enjoy this very versatile round.  Start with 10 grains of unique under a 440 grain lead bullet and you will definitely enjoy shooting it....

Read the FAQs and Help sticky or Handi Basics 101 info, pop opens are easily fixed, either by yourself or H&R, depending on the cause, it's usually user error, but not always. I shoot 700gr cast bullets at over 1400fps and 350gr XTPs at ~2200fps, never had a pop open yet. ;)

6x6 elk, i have not posted on here for a while, read your post about your 500 sw, i was shooting hornady 300 gr evolution factory loads, they were ok but not the best 100-150 yd groups, after season i changed mounts and scope, i tried alot of hand loads and factory loads, the best 100 yd plus groups i can get with this rifle is hornady 350 gr xtp/mag factory loads, 2805/2131/1610, so i going to stay with the hornady for this season, when i changed mounts and scope i went back with a nef ultra mount, warne rings, bushnell banner banner 3x9 matt scope. i am staying with this set-up for my 500 sw, i killed three deer with it last season with the old set-up, so this year it should be better, 6x6 elk if you hit one with the 500 it is going down, but i have all my other handis, 223,25-06,308,30-06,45/70 and 500 sw.

my deer camp/cabin burned a few years ago it was a big loss, i have been building a new log cabin/house on this land this year, i have been working all i can and weekends till dark trying to get the house finished before deer season, its coming along good i will try to post some pictures soon of the log cabin and food plots.

thank you tim yes it was a big loss, i bought that place and land back in 1992, it had a old farm house on the place we fixed it up over two years had a great cabin 3 bedrooms ,a/c,gas heat, big tv for the games, deck on back to watch food plots, it was nice but it all burned down, but after all that i am rebuilding a new 2400 sq.ft. log house/cabin, i have been working on this since the first of the year, i am a welder by trade i am glad i took off this hot summer 100 plus days for two months here in the south.

RO; Thanks for the information. The 350gr. XTP was the next round I was planning to try, along with the Platinum tip. If anyone else has any suggestions on factory ammo to try I would greatly appreciate it.
