7.62x39 range report
« on: September 02, 2007, 10:26:58 AM »
i happened to be in Sportsman's Warehouse on Friday night and picked up a couple of boxes of Wolf 122 grain hollow points.  I hadn't shot any of this type of ammo in my handi and i was curious. The good news is that most of them fired on the first trigger  and a couple fired on the second hammer strike but 4 would not fire. i knew this was why H&R discontinued them.  Accuracy was decent for my EOHOT (elbows on hood of truck) rest.  All that fired went into about 3 inches at 100 yards.  I will be back to loading the Hornady 123's and my 165 grain lead bullets.

Would a longer firing pin help to fire the cheap stuff  or a firmer hammer spring?  just curious....

The pin and spring change shouldn't hurt a bit, using Fred's advice in the Whelen thread should work too. I've not used them yet, but the Wolff springs seem to me the way to go for a stronger spring. The only issue I see with them would be destroying the transfer bar.

Is the transfer bar that soft?

It's composed of two pieces, the lifter and the striker, they have a habit of becoming two pieces again occaisionally under normal use, that's why I think with a  heavy hammer spring it may not have very good longevity, but that's just my opinion, no one has reported on using a heavy spring yet, just replacement H&R springs as far as I know. The striker part is kind of a weak link in the t-bar system. You could eliminate it with an old style hammer as I did in the low profile hammer mod part 2. It would eliminate the hammer stop and allow direct full impact on the firing pin.

Could you silver solder a hardened piece of steel onto the existing hammer to replace the transfer bar?

That should work too, but be aware that when the hammer is forward, it will likely cause the firing pin to protrude out of the breech face, the old style hammers have a half cock notch so the hammer doesn't rest against the firing pin, part of the reason the t-bar was created. ;)
