.22-250/7.62x39 range report
« on: September 03, 2007, 02:19:44 PM »
took out the new .22-250 and the 7.62 this weekend. the 7.62 with my handloads did great, 1/2 moa all day long out to 400 yards. the .22-250.....well thats another story. had some various factory fodder and a bunch of different handloads. nothin would group well at all. 3 inches at 100 or worse were the norm. thats when i tried something. i improvized on the magnet trick. i took a business card and folded it into quarters and put it under the forend. with the heavier bullets it helped a bit, but with the 40 grain v-maxes it really helped, started grouping between 3/4 inch and an inch. but one thing i noticed before and after that was the point in impact shift between bullet weights. the 40's were about dead on and the 55 and 60 grainers were 12 inches higher. i am attributing this to barrel harmonics but i am not sure. anyone else had this problem??

Had this happen with my 30-30. With 170's sighted dead on at 100 yards, the 150's would actually strike the dirt below the target frame. I attributed this to the 170, being a couple of hundred feet per second slower, was allowing the recoil to affect the angle of departure of the bullet. (did I say that right?) I expected a difference, but not that much, nearly 20 inches!
