788 SCOPE MOUNT QUESTION.....
« on: August 10, 2007, 03:01:47 PM »
 Hi,

I just picked up a 788 in 243 ...1982 model, 18.5 " barrel, very good blueing, great bore, original stock.

It has an incorrect scope mount installed...A friend at a local gun - pawn  shop who has several
Remingtons told me it was the wrong mount...

What is the best one-piece "weaver style" mount to  for the 788...And are there any that come with more than just two slots on top for mounting the (weaver style) rings ?

Also it's missing the one of the rear sight hole plugs, what size plug screw do I need to get ?

Thanks Alot !
Eric

According to Brownell's they don't make a one piece base.  The Brownell part #'s are front: 955-010-076 and rear: 955-010-075.  The 788 is still common enough that just about any gun shop with a decent inventory should have the bases in stock and also a tray of assorted blind screws.

Graybeard sponsor The Optic Zone list Weaver bases #75 and #76 for the Remington 788.  A check of an old Weaver mount chart (Shooter’s Bible) shows no other model using those bases.

When I pulled the sights off my 788 a local gun shop was able to provide the proper blind screws for me.

As I recall the Remington 788’s that came with a factory mounted scope had a two-piece Weaver type mount.  The scopes were Tasco and Tasco may have provided the mounts.

A .243win?

That would be a short action. Is the 788 somehow different from other models?

I suggest that you call Midway and seek their advice for the correct product.

Until your post I never realized there was more then one action length for the M788.  The assumption being they made the difference up in the magazine.  But they did chamber it for the .44 Mag, and the .222 Remington.  So are they the Short, and Long actions?  Would that make the .243, 30-30, 308, 6mm, 22-250, and 7mm-08 as extra long actions.

The twist is that most of the rounds listed are considered Short Action rounds in other rifles.  In the case of the 788 where they re-defined?

As I recall the 243 is considered the Xtra Long action.  222 and 30-30 are the short action, 22-50 is long and then 243, 6mm, etc are the xtra long action.  If I went and looked I believe I have one I took off my 6mm many yrs ago.
Good Shooting,
George

This may not make a whole lot of sense as far as long and extra long actions but, here goes....

Exhibit A;

Redfield 1-Piece Standard Scope Base Remington 788  <Extra Long Action Gloss>

The 243, 7mm-08, 308, 6mm all take the same stock...So I believe they are all EXTRA LONG ACTION

Exhibit B;
Redfield 1-Piece Standard Scope Base Remington 788  <Long Action Gloss>

The 22-250, 222, 223, 30-30 take the same stock

The 44 Rem Mag. has its own stock, and its own magazine

I believe these are all LONG ACTIONS

The #'s for the weaver two piece mounts are...
#75  (8-40) Thread
#76  (1/2)

I got the scope base info from Midways website...The also offer Weaver bases in Long and Extra Long Actions...whether the holes line up is another story ???
