Pistol primers in Rifles?????

I have a difficult time locating LR primers around here and I'm wondering if I could sub LP primers for my application.  I'm reloading 30/30 with a 140gr cast/lubed with C. red under 8.5gr of Unique seated to 2.45".  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't ever even dream of it. Besides being slightly different in size...there can be pressure issues. Obviously the load you suggest is very light but why take the chance.

Few times in the world of handloading is subsitution a great idea without supporting and reliable info.

from the FAQ section of CCI:

Q: I have CCI Large Pistol primers. Can I use them instead of Large Rifle primers that I need to load for my rifle loading?
A: This is not advisable. Large pistol primers have less priming compound, and are shorter than Large Rifle primers. Misfires and under-ignition are very likely.

If I really couldn't find large rifle primers I would try it since the load appears quite conservative.  There might be a problem with misfires though.  It would be much preferable to use rifle primers.

A: STOP!!! The problem you described indicates GROSSLY EXCESSIVE pressures. You have deformed the case head, something that takes pressures in the 75,000 to 85,000 psi range. Don't shoot any more of that ammo
