S&W 500 info needed
« on: September 03, 2007, 06:03:54 AM »
Hello,
I have a new S&W 500 (4 inch) that I am going to be reloading for soon.  I just about have all the parts and pieces that I need, but I was hoping to pick up some additional information here.
I am going to be loading the 440 grain wide nose lead with a gas check from Leadheads.  I am looking at the 34 to 40 grain range of H110.

So first question - what is the best primer to use.  I have seen loads using the Large Pistol Primer, the Large Pistol Magnum Primer and even the Large Rifle Primer.  In my experience, there can be a lot of differences in between primers.  LPP vs. Mag primer vs. LRP - this is quite the spread and I hope you all can shed some light on this subject for me.

Second question - what is the max case length and what is the "trim to" case length?

Third question - what is the max cartridge overall length?

I realize that these are somewhat silly questions for an experienced reloader, but the problem is that I can not find a single reloading book that covers the S&W 500.  As popular as the cartridge is, I would have expected there to be at least one book out there on it - but I can't find anything except word of mouth.
Thanks for your input.

Pick up a 2007 Hodgdon Annual, it has all that info including 440gr cast load data, although it's for the Cast Performance bullet. The Annual costs just $7, should be available at your local Walmart. Their H110 load starts at 34gr, MAX is 38gr. ;) The data is also available online, but they don't show trim length which is 1.615".
