Price of SP101 and Sights
« on: September 30, 2007, 07:29:39 AM »
I've been doing a little shopping around for a Ruger SP101. The prices I've found have been between $475 and $500. Last night I went to Bass Pro, and while they didn't have an SP101, they had a GP100 for $499. Now Bass Pro isn't known for the best gun prices, but it seems to me there should be a bigger price difference between the Sp101 and GP100 than $25. So maybe the places where I've looked have been high. What's the going price for an SP101 in your area?

Also, has anyone put an adjustable sight on their SP101? I saw one guy sent his off to Cylinder and Slide for $200 to have one fitted. It seems high, but again, Cylinder and Slide did the work, which I'm sure is top notch. Looks like you could just mount a rear sight off a K-frame Smith right on it. I wish they just made a GP100 with a 2.5" barrel.

A GOOD gunsmith could easily shorten the barrel on a GP-100.

I bought an SP101 DA, 2,25" barrel on Gunbroker or GunsAmerica can't remember now for $369 NIB shipping was $15 my transfer fee was $10.  This beat any over the counter deal.  Best O the C was $449 + 8.25% Perry tax

Ok, so you seem to want a 2 1/2" bbled revolver but with adjustable sights...  At the range such a gun is designed for, having adjustable sights is kinda a moot point.    It would likely be a defensive revovler and with defensive range commonly being a max of 21 feet, it's simply not a range where adjustable sights would really be a benefit.  Just me thining anyways.
Secondly, being concerned over a 425 price diffeence yet wanting the machining for adjuastbale sights afterwards...Again, sorry if I'm thinking  of base here but such work would basially null and void the little $25 amount.
I can say I've had a 2 1/4" SP101 for years now and it's always shot great out to and a bit past the 21' distance.  never bothered with it past that range as it is after ll a defensive revolver.  To each thier own I guess though.

I'm trying to get back to having one gun for everything.

For years now when hunting, I've been carrying my Colt 1991-A1. I put a few custom touches on it, but there are two things I don't like about it. It could be more accurate, which I could fix if I invested more money into it. Second, it's big and heavy, which I really can't change.  It's ok for home defense, but it's not something I want to carry all day, everyday. And while it fills a basic role as a trail gun while rifle hunting, I think a revolver would be much more suitable.

I also have a Ruger p85, again a good self defense pistol, bad hunting pistol, not easy to conceal.

I have an old Charter Arms Undercover/Off Duty 38 which I love. Actually, this is my second Charter, I traded away my first, regretted it, and bought another. It's small, lightweight, fairly accurate, not extremely powerful.

Hence, I want something the same size as the Charter for self-defense concealed carry, but I want something more powerful with a little more accuracy.
Not that I'm going to hunt bear with it or anything, but have a decent sized trail gun. Smith used to make some 2.5 inch M19's with adjustable sights, I want something comparable in a Ruger.

You've heard the old saying, beware the man that has only one gun, he probably knows how to use it. My thinking is I'd be better served carrying the same handgun for CC and hunting, just because of familiarity and knowing what it does in every circumstance. Not switching back and forth between DA and SA, auto and revolver. I Just want ONE PERFECT GUN. Of course it may not be possible, but a guy has the right to try, right?

The only problem I have with the price difference, is that it seemed weird you could get a 4" adjustable sight six shot GP100 for $499 and a 2" fixed sight 5 shot SP101 for $475.

Actually, Smith does still make a 686 with a 2.5inch barrel.

When I had my SP101---it was quite accurate with the fixed sights.

Cabela's just sent out a sale flyer with bobbed hammer SP101's are marked down to $439.99.

Also had a 686P 2.5in----even with the short barrel----it was still a big gun.

I found an SP101 at Sportsmans Warehouse today for $439. They had the 2", 2" bobbed, and 3 inch. They also had a Smith M60 Chief Magnum with a 3" barrel and adjustable sights. It was nice, but a little front heavy, just didn't balance right in my hand. Also, I hated the hammer lock.

Side by side, the Ruger kicked it arse even without adjustable sights. So it's layaway time.
