38-55 loads
« on: September 01, 2007, 06:17:59 PM »
My son-in-law just got a 38-55 and we are going to do some loading for it. It is a W&H model target made by H&R.
Anyone have any pet loads for lead bullets. When I had one the bore was a bit oversized and it shot .375 jacketed bullets poorly. In fact they all struck the 50 yd. target size ways.
Thanks.

There's a great link in the FAQs on the 38-55 Target. Handirifle has had good accuracy with his shooting cast bullets.

Yep get em sized to .379 or .380 and they ought to do fine.  Several companies make them, I use Chey Cast bullets and black powder, 2.8cc of GOEX cartridge powder.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

When I had my 38-55 we used 375 Win. brass for it and loaded according to 38-55 loads. Worked well. Thats all there was as 38-55 brass was not available new.

I should mention that you have to squeeze the 375 a bit after its loaded because they are too thick to chamber. A loaded 38-55 mics about .395 and a 375 about .399 diameter.
