Marlin Model 1895SS in 45/70
« on: August 01, 2007, 10:33:51 AM »
Several months ago I bought a used 1895 in 45/70.I took off the scope and mounts. The previous owner had removed the rear sight to mount the scope.First I put on a new rear sight that was one of those flat folding ones.Just didn't have a good sight picture.Last week I obtained a standard buckhorn type such as was original to the rifle.Today I took it to the range and was tickled pink to have a 2" group at 100 yards with my 300 grain handloads. The buckhorn style sight has a very good sight picture.
This is going to be an excellent deer and hog rifle.

Yes, these rifles are very good for deer and hogs.  Come to think of it, there's little game they are not good for.

That's pretty darn good with iron sights......

I'd love to know what powder  your using.....

My 45/70 load is a 300 grain Remington HP over 40 grains of REL7 and a CCI large rifle primer.

Hello guys, I'm new here but I've been shooting and reloading for 30-40 years.
My 1895 will group 1" or better with a scope sight and careful handloads but I'm happy with 3" 100 yd groups with the receiver sights now on the gun!
Under most conditions I'll not have a shooting bench to use in the field anyway.
  thanks ,Glenn
